We had the machine gun mounted on a wooden' box because the tripod had been lost somehow along the line. A lot of things had been lost all along our line. I had only the clothes I wore, and they had proved almost a liability ; because the Germans had captured large stores of GI uniforms and were using them so no one trusted anyone. There was a kitchen from some outfit In the town near by and they split their ra tions with us elements of other divisions that had been scattered in the surprise at tack. I had been on duty in Cler vaux, Luxembourg, and sep arated from my regular in fantry battalion. After leav ing there in haste and walking for miles, I'd found some other soldiers, lost like myself. We had picked up an officer or two along the way and made brief and futile stands at roadblocks along the road to Bastogne.
