THESE GREEKS HAVE LOTS OF WORDS-Students in
Athens, Greece shout and match in a rioting crowd during
a demonstration protesting the U. S. stand on the Cypress
auestion. Greece has demanded a plebiscite in Cypress, on
. le question of whether that island will switch from British
rule to Greek. The U. S. voted against bringing, up the
matter in the UN.

It is a woman's great necessity
To love as long as she shall live.
. - Phoebe Cary
How bid was your mother
when you were born? Gyrte
. cologists claim the best years for
a ..woman to have children is
when she is from 18 to 23. Chil
dren born in that period, say the
gynecologists,, are most likely
to ; develop into the healthiest
and most intelligent adults. That
lets me out. My mother was 31
' years old when I was born.

So They Say
Bachelorette considering mar
riage to a Capricornian (Decem
ber 22-January 19) asks what
the stargazers " think of such
males as matrimonial material.
Capricorn men have a passion
for privacy. They like to be alone.
Are a kind of male Garbo. As
husbands they must be provided
with dens to retire to and be
alone with their thoughts. They
are allergic to talkative women.
Prefer females who are good
listeners of the "yes woman"
type. A Capricornian likes for a
wife a good cook, housekeeper
and laundress and one who keeps
the house spotlessly clean and
can account by a budget, for
every cent spent. Capricorn men
are good providers, loyal hus
bands but seldom great lovers.
Briefly, they are dull but de
pendable. Or, so say , the star
gazers. Sidelights -
If was Bernard Baruch who
observed, "Every man has a
right to his own opinion but no
man has a right to be wrong in
his facts." . . . What street name
in this country is the most diffi
cult to make strangers under
stand over the telephone? How
about Winganhauppag Avenue,
Islip, N. Y.? Making that clear
over the telephone must be a
terrific strain on the vocal
chords.
Smoky Embrace
The kissing scene between
Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant
in the film "Notorious" was
"fairly torrid" in the opinion of
a New Yorker but not to be com
peared in intensity to that be
tween Olga Nethersole and
Aubrey Boucicault in the stage
piay &appno. xnai Kissing
scene was so heated that the po
lice closed the show and; took
Miss Nethersole into custody.
One critic described the scene as
a "smoky embrace." The kiss in
Sappho" lasted three minutes.
At present, screen kisses are
limited to fifteen seconds. At
some studios ten seconds is the
maximum. Incidentally, the. av
erage kiss in real life between
man and wife lasts two seconds.
Between sweethearts five sec
onds.
Over There
Recent ruling in France pro
hibits the sale of alcoholic
drinks between' 5 a.m. and 10
a.m. Such a ruling would be no
great hardship in this country.
After all, who drinks liquor
that early in the day in the U.
S. A.? In France it' is different.
Many Frenchmen ljke to have
their breakfast at a sidewalk
cafe. And they are very fond of
having cognac or rum with their
coffee.
Spain in Grip Of Worst Drought;
Eleciric
Hv; Scarce
, Madrid (U.R) -The south and
central sections of Spain are in
the grip of their worst drought
in many years. Cities as well as
farm areas are affected.
Spain is 90 per cent dependent
on hydro-electric plants for its
power. With many of the big
dams down , to less than 15 per
cent of capacity, .there is a
chronic electricity crisis.
. The big electricity companies
are in an awkward spot. They
are the but for music hall jokes,
newspaper criticisms, and car
toonist's barbs. ,.
Rationing Introduced ; -
Electricity rationing has been
introduced three days a week to
try and spread the load.
And when the lights do come
on at seven in the evening there
is frequently very little force
behind the power.
The little man in business is
hard hit, too, for the rationing
of power is general for all types
of consumers, except a few in
dustries rated as essential, in
cluding the press. Most big firms
have their own private generat
ing plants run by fuel oil ex
pensive to run but good enough
to keep the machinery turning.
But some small factories', hair
dressing salons, photograph stu
dios and a host - of other bus
nesses where electric power , is
essential are forced to idle or do
the best they , can with ; make-:
shift material. .
- Firms cannot lay off employ
Can't Lay Off Workers
ees because of the restrictions,
according to government edict,
so the employer has to cut his
losses the best way he can.
The government is making
desperate efforts to help the
companies get over the crisis.
An accord has been signed with
a French company to ship power
across the frontier, and a big
campaign is underway .to in
crease the number of coal and
oil-burning generators through
out . Spain. Work is going on
apace with the construction of
new dams to step up the hydp-
electrlc output, and ; new lines
tional power from the north of
are being laid to , carry addi
Spain, which has the heaviest
rainfall in the Pennisula. -
But an ever-increasing power
consumption, as Spain becomes
more' industrialized, so far has
kept the demand for electricity
one jump ahead of production.
