Hostess-Manager of t Blair House
On Company -JLvery -Day Routine
Br HARMON W. NICHOLS
United Press Correspondent
Washington U.R) Mrs. Vic
toria Geaney can hardly wait
'til Christmas. She's invited out
for a home-cooked meal.
It isn't that the personable,
gray-haired little lady doesn't
live pretty high at the place she
calls home. She certainly does.
Mrs. Geaney for the past 35
years has had quarters in Blair
House, the government's plush
guest house for important offi
cial visitors. As hostess-manager
she probably has entertained
more royalty from around the
world than any other living
person. . .: V
, ''How many guests have you
had this year?" I asked during
a visit to the famous' guest
house.
Company Every Day '
"Heavens, I have them all
written down some place, but I
haven't had time to add them
up," she said. ."But it's company
every day here." . .
Mrs. Geaney supervises quite
a housekeeping job.
Even as one group leaves, the
help has to prepare for the next.
Seldom does a day go by with
out at least one dinner and a
couple of receptions. ; ,
"I never have a minute to my
self until everybody is bedded
down and the local guests have
been shooed out," she said.
Blair House was built in 1824
by Dr. Joseph Lovell. It was the
scene of many a gay party in the
early days, and was sold in 1836
to Francis. Preston Blair forJ
$6600.
The government took over the
house in 1942.
Her Autograph Book
Mrs. Geaney has seen them
all. Her guest book' contains the
autographs of kings, the high
and mighty of the world's mili
tary, prime ministers, presi
dents, ambassadors.
"Know what?" the lovely lady
said. "See this suite? That's
where Mr. and-Mrs. Truman and
Margaret lived while they were
fixing up the White House
across the street. Well, sir, they
were my quarters for eight years
long before Mr. Truman ever
dreamed of becoming Presi
dent." There is, by the way, one fa
