Claire Engle (D-Calif.) said Sat urday he will resort, if neces sary, to an obscure, 150 years old parliamentary maneuver to get statehood legislation for Alaska and Hawaii before the House. Engle said such a step would be required only if the rules committee tries to bottle up state hood legislation and he does not expect it to do so. Rough Sledding Predicted isut most ODservers nave pre dicted rough sledding for state hood bills in the new Congress. Speaker-designate Sam Rayburn (D-Tex.), and the chairman-designate of the rules committee, Rep. Howard W. Smith (D-Va.), have shown personal distaste for such bills in the past. The two measures enjoy strong support, however, in the Inter ior Committee, where they must originate. Chairman Engle and ranking Republican A. L. Miller of Nebraska both champion the statehood cause. Special Gambit Engle said he has discovered that parliamentary regulations governing the House permit the Interior Committee chairman to employ a special gambit in the case of statehood legislation. A regulation- dating back to 1812 permits the interior chair man to call up committee ap proved, state enabling bills as privileged business at any time, Christmas is nearing, the Yuletide is here. House Darliamentarv experts said the rule has not been used, at least for many years, on state hood legislation. They said the procedure has "disadvantages," including possible difficulty in limiting debate. Funeral Services Planned Friday for Anslem L Burke Private funeral services for Anslem Louis "Dad" Burke, 93, who died at his home, 311 South Oakdale ave., on Friday, will be conducted in Chapel Mortuary, with committal services, also pri vate, in the Medford lOOP Mau soleum. It is requested of the family that there be no flowers. Those wishing to pay their re spects may call at the mortuary Monday and Tuesday. Mr. Burke was born in Wes- ton, Mo., on Aug. 17, 1861. He was married in St. Joseph's, Mo., on Oct. 5, 1885, to Millie M. Uhl, who survives. Mr. Burke was owner and publisher of the "Car rizozo Outlook," Carrizozo, N. M. for 30 years prior to his retire ment in 1946, at which time he moved to Medford. He was active in politics, and was the keynote speaker, for many state and county conven tions, and he served frequently as a lecturer and speaker. He was a Past Worshipful Master of Carrizozo Lodge No. 41, AF&AM, a Past Noble Grand of the Carrizozo IOOF'lodgf and a member of the Baptist church, . Other survivors include one son, Lewis A., of Medford; two daughters, Mrs. R. T. Lucas and Mrs. Philip S. Bright, both of Medford; and, two grandsons, Lewis and Robert Thomas Bright, Medford. Riverside ave., was taken to Sacred Heart hospital by Perl ambulance about 6:25 p.m.- Friday when she fell and apparently hurt her hip in front of the Craterian theater. Police said they were informed she stepped on a water meter cover and it tipped. She reportedly was released after ex amination by a doctor. Health Program Dr.- Earl Lawson and Dr. R. G. Barnes will "discuss lung cancer and the new chest x-ray program of the Jackson county public health as sociation during a television pro gram on station KBES-TV at 6 p.m. today. Has Eye Surgery Mrs Bertha Rose Soliss, a pioneer of the Rogue valley and a former longtime resident of Phoenix has has returned to her home at 127 South Mayo ave., Compton, Calif., after undergoing eye sur gery in Long Beach.
