Dr Hurlock PLANNING HELPS AVOID HOLIDAY DISAPPOINTMENT For everyone, regardless of age, religion, or anything else, Christmas is one of the most im portant days of the year. For weeks there are busy days of preparation. Then, when the day actually arrives, it is far too often a let down. Many people wonder if all the time and thought given to preparations were worth while. s , . This is most , unf or tu n a t e , lor it is likely to spoil mem ories of Christ mas and affect the person's at titude toward future Christ mas celebra tions. When there are young chil dren in the home, Christmas day may not be dull but it is not al ways the happy day the children and their Barents had antici pated. As the day progresses, the children become tired and fretful, making the home at mosphere tense and unpleasant To avoid the let-down feeling, here are some suggestions: 1. Plan for Christmas far enough in advance that there will be no last-minute rush. That rush is primarily responsible for making everyone tired and fret ful. Even the tree can be partial ly trimmed ahead of time in a home where there are children on the grounds that the family is "helping Santa Claus as he has so many trees to trim in one Eight." 2. Plan interesting activities for the family for the whole day. In far too many homes, all thought .and . effort , are . concen trated on the gifts, the decora tions and the Christmas dinner. But there will be hours of free time that must be planned for if the day is to be an enjoyable one. 3. As Christmas is tradition ally a "home day," try to arrange a family gathering for a time of the day when there is no other activity. If there are no family members nearby, then join forces with several other, families in the same boat and make it a day to be with near and dear friends. LETTERS 5ROM READERS . "My children always get so . many toys on Christmas thai ' ihey don't know what lo do with them. How can I stop ihis deluge?" (A) If you have discovered, from past experience, that your relatives and friends give your children toys for Christmas, why not limit the number you buy and give them more practical gifts, such as mittens and scarves? Or, if your relatives consult you about what to get for the children, you can suggest books, records, clothing or some thing for their rooms. It is a waste of money to deluge a child with toys, for few children actu ally play with all the toys they have. "I have been dating a young fellow since last summer. I don'x know whether he will give me a gift for Christmas or not. My mother says ." I should not give him a gift un less he gives me one. This leaves me in an uncertain state. What shall I do?" (A) Why not get a present for your friend a tie, a book, some sporting equipment or anything you think he might like have it wrapped with a card, and ready to give to him? Then, if he gives you a gift, you can give it to him. If he doesn't, keep it. "My wife says the only thing she really wants for Christmas is an electric washer. We have a baby and I know this would help her a lot but it just doesn't seem like the kind of present a man should give his wife at Christmas." (A) Even if you would rather give your wife some lingerie, jewelry or perfume, restrain your desire and give her what she wants most. State Education Department Booklet Revised, Published Salem A revised edition of the publication, "Organization and Functions of the State De partment of Education," is now available for use by teachers, ad ministrators, and others inter ested, according to Rex Putnam, superintendent of public instruc tion. . Prepared by staff members of the divisions of general educa tion, vocational education, and vocational rehabilitation, it con tains up-to-date charts and inf or mation on the structure and serv ices of the State Department of Education, which in actual prac tice consists of the State Board of Education, the superintendent of public instruction, the State Textbook commission and the three divisions. Revised Publication The pamphlet is a revision of an earlier publication which proved helpful to all persons seeking information or assistance from the State Department of Education. Sufficient copies have been mailed to each county school su perintendent to permit redistri bution of one copy to every ele mentary and secondary school building in each county. Beals, chief of the division of foods and dairies in the State Department of Agri culture, said here. - He said the department has been receiving some license money for this purpose, and has no authority to accept it. Vancouver, Wash. (U.R) A burning red flare, possibly from a passing airplane, was dropped in the vicinity of east Vancouver Thursday night. Police said the flare drifted to the ground on a parachute.
