The other 12, two dimension al and of varying heights, form the facade for the store. These are mounted on a frieze 32 feet high and 76 feet long. The back ground is midnight blue and 2,000 stars light the sky. Miss Clarebout studied paint ing and sculpture at the Royal Academy of Art in London and the Julien studio in Paris. "But I always wanted to set tle down in the United States," she said in an interview. "Two years ago I made it." The sculptress used wire as fine as .061 of an inch in thick ness for the folded wings, which are seven feet long. The wires are worked so intricately the re sult is like filigree. Various thicknesses of wire up to a of an inch were used for other parts of the figurines. Aluminum wire, with an in terlacing of brass, forms-' the body of the angels, gowned in flowing robe effect. Their heads are of brass wire, curled so the angels actually look as if they are wearing long bobs. Their halos are of brass tubing; so are their accessories trumpets, lutes, lyres and cymbals. "I got the idea from that line in the carol, 'of angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold'," said the sculp tress. Her tools were her hands and a pair of pliers. Her hands show the long hours 50 to 60 for each angel, not counting the extra work for the wings. "I don't have a whole finger nail left," she said. "My arms are a mass of scratches up to my elbows." But she is proud of the re sults. "I got so fond of the angels I hated to see them leave the warehouse," she said. This number would be in ad dition to the 3,500,000 veterans who already have borrowed more than $23,500,000,000 for homes, farms, and businesses. In the 10-year report of the GI loan guaranty program, VA said it seems reasonable to as sume, -that at least 1,000,000 more loans would be made to World War If veterans and at least 2,000,000 to veterans of the Korean conflict, Most World War II veterans have until July 25, 1957, to db tain GI loans. Post - Korea vet erans have until 10 years after the end of the present emer gency, a date yet to be determin ed by presidential proclamation or by congressional resolution. The report dubbed the legis lative and administrative history of the GI loan program "a bold venture in veterans - benefits." VA boss Harvey Higley said it is "the greatest government sponsored credit venture" of its kind. M " ' Judge Mundorff Studies Suit for Revocation Portland (U.R) - Circuit Judge Lowell Mundorff Friday took under advisement. a suit seeking to revoke the recent dis charge of 54 employees of the city public works department. The suit, filed by former em ployees, contend that their sen iority should extend across de partmental barriers in the mat ter of discharge, and that a civil service regulation confining sen iority toondividual departments is contrary to provisions of the city charter. Strauss of the At omic Energy commission wish es the controversial Dixon-Yates power contract had been nego tiated directly ;with the Ten nessee Valley Authority rather than with the AEC. Defends Contract But Strauss defends the con tract as an ideal one. He told a press conference Friday the contract is "reasonable and fair to the government, and there fore to the American taxpayer." Democrats have attacked the contract as an attempt by pri vate utilities to wreck TVA and have charged it will put the AEC unnecessarily into the power business. The contract calls for the Dixon-Yates combine to sell power to the AEC from a 600,000-kilo-watt plant the utility group will build at West Memphis, Ark. This power will be generated into the TVA system, replacing an equal amount of TVA pow er now being supplied to the AEC's Paducah, Ky., installa tion. 1 - .; Hearings Underway ; The Securities and Exchange commission currently is holding hearings on financial details of the Dixon-Yates plan. The hear ings will end next Wednesday or Thursday. The SEC plans to hand down its decision by mid-February, after allowing time for the pro and anti-Dixon-Yates forces to file legal briefs and counter briefs.
