New Super Highway Opens in Washington Vancouver, Wash U.R) A new section of super Evergreen highway between Vancouver nd Camas, Wash., was to be opened here today after comple tion of an $860,845 Washington highway project. Tho section stretches for more than five miles from the astern city limits of Vancouv er to Fishers. It is 24 feet wide but is graded for an eventual four lanes. It eliminates 13 curves on the old route. It al lows complete through traffic by use of channelized access connections. Completion of the work to Camas is expected to begin by April 1. Everybody loves shortenin' bread; few have eaten chocolate nut shortbread like this: 1 cup butter or margarine lVz cups confectioners' sugar 2V4 cups flour 2 squares unsweetened chocolate V4 cup chopped walnuts Melt the chocolate over hot water and beat into the butter or margarine. Add the sugar, then the flour and mix well. Add the walnut meats, then roll and chill in the refrigerator un til very firm. Remove and slice for cookies. Place on baking sheet but before placing in the oven, press a walnut half light ly in the center of each cookie. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 min utes, then remove and let cooL Makes about 2Vi dozen. Curritd Casserole Quick and very good, this cas serole makes eight servings Combine one lOVi ounce can condensed undiluted cream of mushroom soup and a No. 2 can of small white onions (or fix and cook two cups small white on ions). Season with three fourths teaspoon curry powder; top with buttered crumbs. Bake 30 min utes in a moderate oven, 375 de grees. ' Spiced Grapefruit Spiced and broiled fresh grapefruit! Cut grapefruit in half as usual. Remove seeds. Separ ate sections from rind and mem brane. Cut out core. Sprinkle with brown sugar . and ground cinnamon mixture, using one teaspoon ground cinnamon for one cup firmly packed brown sugar. Place under broiler to brown and for sugar to melt. Christmas Peaches Delectable with any roast or poultry. Plan to chill 24 hours for "ripening." Drain syrup from a No. . 2V (large) can of peach halves. Add one-fourth cup cider vinegar, one-third cup brown sugar, one-half teaspoon each whole allspice and cloves tied in'a bag and one stick whole cinnamon. Heat to boiling point and boil, three minutes. Add peaches. Cover. (Jhill 24 hours before serving. Holiday Salad . Arrange . sections . of pink grapefruit and avocado slices on beds of head lettuce. Serve with a mixture of one-fourth cup fresh lemon juice, one-half cup salad oil, one-half teaspoon salt, one-fourth teaspoon whole cel ery seed, one dash ground black QT. j PT. i y r a ht VINCENT Editor pepper and a dash of garlic pow der. Douglas Fir Lumber Production Declines Portland U.R) Production of Douglas fir lumber is off nearly 1,000,000 board feet over an 11-month period this year as compared with the same period in 1953, the West Coast Lumber men s association estimated yes terday. (U.R) A 14 -year -old Dunsmuir, Calif., baby sitter rescued three small children from a burning apart ment house Wednesday by breaking a window screen and dropping them four feet into the snow. All four escaped without in jury in the fire which gutted an apartment. The baby sitter, Wilma Jean Dowling, was tending the three children of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Jeter at their apartment in Duns muir.
