( International ) Court To Study Wife-Mate Suit Roseburg U.R) The Ore gon Supreme Court will be ask ed to decide whether a wife can sue her husband for injuries sustained in an auto accident. Attorney's for Mrs. Naomi Joan Smith of Sutherlin, Ore., has filed notice of appeal from a Circuit Court decision favor ing her husband, Leo L. Smith. Attorneys said the case would be used to test the law and that it may set a precedent in civil . suits of that kind. . Mrs. Smith seeks $48,000 from her husband, claiming that he was negligent in the operation of his car when it was involved in an accident near Corvallis, Ore., in April, 1952. Mrs. Smith, who was riding with her hus band, said she received perman ent injuries. The defense argued that spec ial legislation would be required to make such a damage action possible. The plaintiffs counsel said every person has a natural right to protect his life and limb, regardless of his relation ship to the damaging party. Portland To Discuss Morrison St. Bridge - Portland (U.R) A public hearing to .discuss plans for the proposed new Morrison street bridge has been called for 10 a.m. January 12, by the Portland district corps of engineers. Multnomah county has applied to the engineers for a permit to construct the bridge across the Willamette river from a point midway between S.W. Washing ton street and S.W. Alder street on the west side to the foot of S.E. Morrison street on the east side. The structure would have three spans, a double-leaf bas cule span similar to the Burn side bridge, and two fixed side spans. Dock Commission Gets Bond Check Portland (U.R) A check for $4,400,000 was received by the Portland Dock commission for the sale of bonds yesterday. Chairman Joe E. Dunne, com mission members, - and Mayor Fred L. Peterson of Portland took a good look at the whop ping check, which represents a major portion of the $6,500,000 bond issue authorized by voters last May for improvements in the municipal dock system. E. C. Sarnmons, president of the U. S. National bank, said bis bank issued the check as trustee 'for a syndicate of eight New York and Portland financial con cerns who bought the bond issue. Navy Will Make Change in Forrestal Washington (U.R) The Navy said today it has decided to make a slight change in its brand new supercarrier, the Forrestal. It's going to rip out the five story bridge and move it 20 feet. It will take 80,000 man-hours and roughly one million dollars to do the job. But the Navy in sisted it is "not a major altera tion" and certainly "not a blunder." Merely an improvement, said the service, stemming from new studies of aircraft and ship con trol needs. It shouldn't held up completion of the "ship, now scheduled for late next year; Visiting Fireman Wins High Praise Schenectady, N. Y. (U.R) Frank Del Monico was truly a "visiting fireman." A voluntary fireman here, he was on vacation in Greenwood, Miss., recently. He was standing on a street corner when he heard an alarm. He raced to the fire, presented his Schenectady credentials and went to work.
