SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, December 15, 1954 Polio Vaccine May Be Available For All First, Second Graders .New York Plans call for the Salk anti-polio vaccine to be made available to all of the nation's first and second grade school pupils if last summer's tests show the drug is effective. That announcement was made this week by the National Foun dation for Infantile Paralysis. The University of Michigan is conducting evaluation of the tests and the report on the study is expected next spring. Last Friday, Dr. Jonas Salk of Pittsburgh, the discoverer of the 'Vaccine, said .he has new evidence that his vaccine can create powerful, long-lasting protection against polio. He also said current experiments in the polio work might lead to the vaccines giving long-term pro tection and influenza. Taken Off List In its announcement yester day, the foundation also said it had removed pregnant .women from its original list of those scheduled to receive the vaccine. The removal was recommend ed by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officers which urged that second graders replace pregnant women because of a higher attack rate among children in tnat age group. The health officers also agreed to administer the vaccine if the foundation provided it, the foundation said. Last October the foundation made plans to purchase enough of the Salk vaccine to inoculate nine million persons. Waiting until spring for the University of Michigan report would make it too late to purchase the vac cine and make preparation for its distribution next summer, the group explained. Those Included The original list of those to be inoculated included all first grade pupils in public, private and parochial schools; all chil dren in 217 areas who took part in last summer's tests but were declared "controls" and did not actually receive the vaccine (some 1,390,000 children; and an estimated 4,275,000 women who would be pregnant between April 1 and September 30, 1955.) CRATERIAN BEAUTY SHOP 41 South Central Phone 2-4830 Farm Credit Needs Topic at Conference Meeting the credit needs of farmers and ranchers during the present squeeze between farm prices' and operating costs was "a topic of discussion at the an nual conference of PCA secretary-treasurers in Spokane, Ir vin Patten, secretary-treasurer of the Southern Oregon Produc tion Credit association, said this week. Patten said the conference, at tended by officers from the 30 associations in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, also featured discussions on annual meetings, membership relations, association capital and reserves and credit legislation. Patten was a member of the committee on membership relations. The foundation added, how ever, that if the vaccine proves effective commercial supplies would be available for pregnant women next summer. Vaccination plans for next summer also include last year's second and third graders in the test areas who acted as "con trols" and are now in the third and fourth grades. Last year's first graders who were not inoculated will auto matically receive the vaccine by the addition of the second grade pupils to the foundation list. State Recreation Commission Urged. Portland U.R) A governor's committee on recreation recom mended yesterday that Oregon have a state recreation commis sion. Samuel H. Smith, assistant su perintendent o f the MacLaren school fory boys, told legislators from Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties that such a commission would be a clearing house for any agency or political subdivision, "Too many school houses and recreation buildings are sitting idle," he said. Coordinated planning could alleviate this, Smith added. United States Signs Philippines Treaty Washington U.R) The Unit ed States and the Philippines signed a new trade agreement today designed to help .the young republic build a stronger and independent economy. The agreement, subject to congressional approval extends until 1974 preferential treat ment for Philippine exports to the United States. It was named after lad's father, Warrant Officer Alfred Felker, who died in helicopter crash near Winterville, Ga., in Feb., 1953 (International). 4 New Tree Farms To Be ledicated Four Jackson county residents will accept tree farm certifi cates at a meeting here Friday evening. The ceremony will bring to some 200,000 acres the total area now certified as tree farms in the county. The certificates will be pre sented 'at a dinner meeting of the Southern Oregon Conserva tion and Tree Farm association at the Jackson hotel's Pioneer room starting at 7:30 p.m. The four men who will accept certificates are B. L. Nutting, manager of the Medford corp oration; William Schmidt, who operates "Little Switzerland" in the hills east of Medford; J. W. Fitzgerald, a rancher, and Al bert Straus, president of the Sams Valley Irrigation assoc iation. The latter two' received certif icates as tree farms from the Industrial Forestry association at the recent convention of Soil Conservation districts in Med ford, and Friday will receive certificates from the Western Pine association. The other two farms will receive certificates from both organizations. Presenting the certificates will be U. R. Armstrong, presi dent of the Western Pine assoc iation, and Floyd Hart, vice chairman of the Industrial For estry association. Glenn Hunter, president of SOCTFA, will preside, and Jim my Dunlevy, manager of KYJC, will be toastmaster. Tree Farms Described A tree farm is an area of pri vately owner forest land de voted primarily to . the contuv uous growth and production of merchantable forest products un der good forest practices. The owners must agree to keep it in forest production, to protect the area from fire, insects, diseases and other hazards, and to har vest timber crops from the area in a manner to assure future crops. ' The tree farm system, while relatively new in the lumber industry, is nation wide, and is sponsored and directed by the American Forest Products In- dustries. The Western Pine and Industrial Forestry associations are the two, certifying agencies in this area. Total of Nins The four new tree farms will bring to a total of nine the num ber of tree farms in Jackson county. The others are operat ed by Elk Lumber company, Fir Milling and Planing company, Kogap Lumber Sales, Inc., Mc Grew Brothers, and Timber Pro ducts company. Largest is the new Medco Tree Farm, and smallest is that operated by McGrew brothers, 80 acres.
