(International) Back Stairs: By MERRIMAN SMITH Uniled Press White House Writer Washingto n (U.R) Back stairs at the White House: Even though construction work on the Eisenhower's Get tysburg house is virtually com plete, prospects of the President and his wife settling there any time soon is some months away. Once the plasterers and painters move out of the Gettysburg house', it will be a slow process before the Eisenhowers can move in. The President and his wife have a lot of furniture in storage and it will take Mrs. Eisenhower some time to deter mine what pieces to put in the Gettysburg house. Mr. Eisenhower said in Octo ber that he wanted to spend at least one night on the farm as soon as possible. And he means it. Chances are that sometime after Christmas he will satisfy that promise to himself. This means that his combination study and office at the Gettys burg house will be the first room to be furnished. Leonard W. Hall, the portly Republican National Committee chairman, came to call on Mr. Eisenhower last week and was litreally chased into the White House lobby by a cab driver. McCarthy's per sonal attacks on Mr. Eisenhower came as no surprise to the chief executive and members of his staff. The President's close associ ates had expected McCarthy to come into direct and open con flict with Mr. Eisenhower for some months. The same asso ciates do not expect McCarthy's attack of last week to be the only one directed by the Wiscon sin lawmaker against the Presi dent. - Secretary of State John Foster Dulles came out of the National Security Council meeting last week at the White House to; be surrounded quickly by reporters. Normally Dulles leaves the White House by a side door, but this time he went out the front door. The newsmen wanted to know Unusual Painting Collection Shown Cooperstown, N. Y. (U.R) J The Farmers' Museum' has put on display what is considered one of the most unusual collec tions of paintings found in this country in recent years. The 13 paintings were part of a "traveling exhibit" more than 100 years ago. For hundreds of upstate New Yorkers of the lime, this "Unparallelled Exhibi tion of Oil Paintings, Embracing Landscapes, Historical Scriptur al and Tragical scenes" was their introduction to the "art world." Done in oil on bedticking and attached to long wooden rollers, four of the paintings depict the murders of four members of a Cayuga County family in 1846 by an insane criminal.' Five are religious scenes, with many of the Biblical characters dressed like central New York country folk of the 1840's. Four other paintings depict historical scenes "The Escape of General Putnam from the British," "The Murder of Jane McCrea," "General George Washington's Headquarters at Newburgh" and "The Burning of an American Captive at the Stake." , The paintings- were commis sioned by George J. Mastin, phrenologist, tailor, storekeeper and farmer of the village of Genoa, who carted them, about the countryside as part , of a show. This also included senti mental and comic singing,' dou ble clog dance and a lecture by Mastin on phrenology. The paintings are in strong colors and of the bold primitive type, authorities say. They pos sibly were done by carriage or sign painters.
