TPU-MEBrORD (ORZOOK) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, December 14, 1934 Painters Discuss Insurance Program t - Representatives of six insur ance companies and delegates of Painters and Plasterers local unions from Oregon, Washing ton, and California met here last week end at the Medford Labor Temple to revise the life insur ance program of the union. The -revision . consolidated . many small insurance programs, which each local union had as an individual group, into one program in which all the local i unions participate as one group. - The new program provides a eheaper rate and allows mem pers to move from one area to . another without losing long evity credit accrued in one to tality. ; ! Bert Carmichael, of the local painters union, stated that it was also the goal of the painters union to effect a consolidation of this nature for the Health and yVelfare program of the union n the near future. Sheppard denied ve hemently from the witness stand today that he got his injuries after his wif e s murder by jump ing or falling from the stairway that runs 50 feet down a bank on his property to the Lake Erie beach. The chief prosecutor wound up his cross-examination of the 30-year-old defendant with ques tions about Dr. Sam's injuries and his lying at the inquest.' Dr. Sheppard has said he got a spinal contusion and other in juries in two struggles with the big, bushy-haired man who he says bludgeoned his wife to death in the pre-dawn hours of last July 4. "Now, doctor," the prosecutor boomed, "isn't it a fact that you beat your' wife that morn ing ... ?" No Sir!' He Says . , "No, Sir!" Dr. Sam interrupted him, his high-pitched voice ring ing like a bell through the room. ". . . and after you had killed her you rushed to the lake and either fell off the stairway or jumped off and got those in juries?" Dr. Sheppard immediately an swered that the question was ab solutely untrue and unfair. Dr. Sam was off the stand at 10:45 a.m. He had begun testify ing as his own star witness at 1:40 p.m. last Thursday and had been on the stand all day Friday and all day yesterday. Greek Students Stone American Buildings Athens, Greece! (U.R) Some 5000 students waving "shame America" placards stoned Amer ian building today and clashed with police in a street brawl that injured 27 persons. The rioters were protesting the United States decision to back Britain rather than Greece in the dispute over Cyprus in the United Nations. , Demonstrations heaved rocks through , windows of buildings in which American or British agencies are located. Many Greek shops windows also were shattered. " Banners carried by the rioters said "shame ' America and Americans we prefer obvious enemies to friends like you. Seattle Fishermen Missing in Pacific Honolulu (U.R) An estimated 1700 Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force personnel searched for the third day today for two Se attle fishermen missing since their boat sank in choppy seas 75 miles northwest of here. Hopes were raised yesterday when debric, mcluding a life jacket, was recovered by a Navy destroyer, but according to un official reports, it did not belong to the ill-fated boat "The Broth ers." The missing men, Arthur Ot ness and his cousin John, were believed drifting in a 15-man balsa life boat. '' Ten surface vessels and nine planes, which have covered more than 10,000 square miles, con tinued the search throughout the night between Oahu and Kauai Islands. Republic of Korea To Get LSM Vessels Seoul, Korea (U.R) The United States will hand over four 1000-ton landing ship (LSM) to the Republica of Korea Dec. 20 and two modern destroyers in June, the ROK Defense min istry announced today. An undisclosed number of pa trol craft also will be given the ROK government in February. Korean crewmen will leave for the United States tomorrow for training. About 300,000 Mexican 'Wetbacks' Deported Mexico City (U.R) Mexican government officials reported today that nearly 300,000 Mexi can wetbacks or illegal en trants were deported from the United States during 1954. The Migrant Labor office said the deportations were in line with the bi-national Migrant La bor . agreement, which sets up conditions for the hiring of "bra- ceros" under contract for work in the United States. Ice Makes Many Roads Hazardous By UNITED PRESS Rainstorms in the Pacific Northwest and Eastern United States turned many highways into treacherous ice hazards ear ly today. . . ; The U. S. Weather Bureau said, however, that most of the rain-soaked areas had tempera tures "just above" .the freezing mark. Heaviest rains fell on the area from Northern Georgia to Eastern Pennsylvania and in the Upper Ohio Valley. .... . Light showers .dotted , the Pa cific Northwest coastal regions. Forecasters said the main storm center was a slow-moving mass hanging over Southeastern Georgia and moving in an east ward direction. . . . . Charleston, S.: C, and Cape Hatteras reported over two inches of rain .within a 24-hour period, but most of the area got from a half -inch to two inches of rain. . Cotton Farmers Vote On Federal Controls Washington (U.R) The na tion's cotton farmers voted today on whether to place their 'crop under federal controls in 1955 for the second consecutive year and accept a sharp outback in acreage. Growers have never rejected controls in eight previous elec tions and. indications were they will accept them again. : The necessary two-thirds of those voting were expected to approve the new controls ' even though it will mean a 15 per eent reduction from this year's acreage allotment to the smallest ever set for cotton.
