SAMSON CO., Inc. 4TH ft FRONT MEDFORD PHONE 2-5295 Tips Given By Auto Engineers Detroit '(U.R) With wintry weather back again,' here are some tips from automotive en gineers that might make winter driving a bit easier: " A bag of sand in the car trunk, to sprinkle under the rear wheels for traction, might mean the dif ference between getting stuck and getting home. The sand in the trunk also adds weight to the rear of the car, improving traction. - Motorists who must park their cars in the open can save them selves work by getting a couple of pieces of cardboard. The card boards, tucked under windshield wipers, will insure clear glass against freezing rain or snow when a motorist is ready to use the car. An old windshild wiper blade, kept in the glove compartment, will come in useful on rare occasions when cold weather moisture is heavy and causes fogging on the inside of the car. The blade will keep the wind shield glass clean longer than the palm of a driver's hand. On sub-freezing days, drivers shouldn't ' add water to their batteries unless they plan to go farther than just a few blocks afterwards. Until the water mixes thoroughly with the bat tery acid, it may freeze and damage the battery. One good trick to . thaw a frozen door lock is to hold a lighted match or the flame of a cigarette lighter to the car key. The heated key will then slip into the lock easily. If a motorists get caught in a sudden cold snap without suf ficient anti-freeze, he can save his radiator by slipping a large cardboard or flattened paper shopping bag in front of the radiator until he reaches his garage for servicing. When a sharp dip in tempera ture is due overnights a car owner can guard against a frozen radiator by hanging a lighted electric bulb under the hood of his car and draping a blanket over the radiator.
