Blind Man Success In Shoe Repair Work Plint, Mich- U.R) James Haiaer was so sure he could be come a shoe repair man that nine years ago he accepted a $100 bet to prove it. Hainer is blind. Shortly after accepting the wager Hainer got hold of some old shoe-repairing equipment with the-aid of the Lions Club. After a few months of training in the operation and mainten ance of the various machines, he started his business. Hainer now .can do all the operations in the shoe shop with the exception of dye and polish work. For that he calls on his ister, Mrs. Dora Robinson. He makes his home with her. His work continually amazes everyone who comes into the store. Customers say the stitch ing work done by him is the equal of any skilled shoemaker with 20-20 vision. Numbers Code Makes Messages Easier for Soldiers in Germany Hamburg, Germany U.R) American soldiers in Germany are playing a new kind of trans Atlantic numbers game. They are sending telegrams in coded figures which, when decoded, will tell the folks back home just about anything. No more is the G. I. seen in German post offices sweatirfg over a telegraph blank to put his thoughts into the right num ber of words. Now the work is done for him. He merely copies down numbers. Numbers of Words For a flat 50 cents he can dis patch a 1-36-321 and be confident his family will receive this mes sage: "Letter received, many thanks. Best wishes. Am getting along all right." Policeman Wins Nash At Fortune Mr. Fred Olin, 1755 Fremont St.; Klamath Falls, was the lucky winner of the Nash Metropolitan given Free by Fortune Station last week. Olin points to the win ning ticket and said "It's the first time I ever won anything' Fortune is now conducting a big Christmas Give-away of bicycles, watches, child's 2-H.P. sport car, etc. Drawing from Free tickets is to be Dec. 1 8th. Love and kisses." 359 Phrases Available The pre-fabricated telegrams there are 359 phrases to choose from were formulated by postal authorities to make it cheaper for G.I.s to send wires home. A message made up of any three phrases will go anywhere in the United States and its territories for 50 cents. After the coded numerals are flashed across the Atlantic they are translated back into words before delivery. While Western Union has of fered "canned" holiday, birth day and anniversary sentiment at cut rates for years, the Ger man system carries the idea to new literary heights. Phrases for Money There are dozens of phrases under such headings as "greet ings" and "health," but by far the most important, as the G.I.s see it, are those under the head ing "money." Here the hard-pressed soldier can find the popular 102 ("Can you make me daily allotment?") There is also the poignant but rarely used 113 ("I do not need money.") Actress' Death Cause Determined Hollywood U.R) Former stage and screen star Gladys George died of a massive cere bral hemorrhage instead of from an overdose of barbiturates as first reported by police, an au topsy showed today. The 50-year-old veteran act ress, .who began her theatrical career at the age of three, was found unconscious in her home Wednesday and was taken to a hospital where she died without regaining consciousness. Dr. Frederick Newbarr, chief coroner's autopsy surgeon, re ported Miss George died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. The Motion Picture Relief Fund will handle funeral serv ices for the veteran trouper to be held tomorow in nearby San ta Monica. Miss George, four times mar ried and divorced, was the daughter of Sir Arthur Evans Claire and Alice Hazen. Many Income Tax Payers in Protest Of 'Tax and Tell' Washington U.R) Apart ment dwellers, residents of small towns and the boss who wants to keep his income secret from his employees appeared today to be the most concerned about the new telltale income tax forms. At least that's the way it looks from the mail received by Rep. Thomas J. Lane (D-Mass.), who is fighting what he calls the In ternal Revenue Service's new "tax and tell" system. Lane has demanded that the tax collection agency call back its 143 freight carloads of print ed forms with colored stripes. A yellow stripe on the outside of your package of forms for the 1954 income tax indicates you made $10,000 or more. A terra cotta, or reddish, stripe, denotes you made between $5,000 and $10,000. ' Sources and the amount of in come are supposed to be. secret under law except to certain authorized officials. Can't Detect Exact Income Assistant Revenue Commis sioner Harrel T. Vance, in a reply to Lane, insisted that snoopers caa't really detect your exact income from the stripes. Vance claims the new forms are less revealing than the old ones, and that the controversy has v become "considerably dis torted in some of the newspaper and other reports." Friday; December 10, 1954 Aline Mostly Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Bing Crosby admitted today he was severely criticized when he ac cepted the role of a hateful al coholic but he was more worried abort whlether he could act the part. ' The crooner, regarded as the most famous popular singer in the world, risked his fabulous career when he agreed to portray a preserved in-alcohol singer in "The Coun try Girl." I His portrayal of the tragic figure appears certain to win him an Academy nomination and possibly, the Oscar itself to add to the one he collected 10 years ago for portraying a priest. But Bing almost backed out of the alcoholic role, he said, not because of the criticism but because he doubted he could handle to assignment. "There was quite a bit of criticism in Catholic periodicals and in fan mail when I accepted the part," Crosby said in an in terview at his home as he pre pared to head for his inevitable golf course. "But I thought there was more to the role than the man's strug gle against alcohol. It was more a fight by this fellow to over come . his insecurity, his unre liability. You don't often get a chance to play something like that, with someone as sensitive as George Seaton to direct you. You gotta take the role. " "I was sure the religious press would agree it was a good part after they saw the picture. "But I had misgivings about whether I was competent to handle the role. I wasn't sure I could be eonvinrinT nVi T could go through the motions and do what the director told me but I didn't know if I could be the man. I almost backed out but after we got started it looked okay." Low key lighting in the film often makes the famous Bing look like an old, pathetic drunk, a sight that may sock his fans. But the Groaner smiled he is un concerned about his looks. He's more anxious because some friends complained he doesn't "punch across" the first song in the picture. , A Has-Been "The character wasn't sup posed to," he said. ."It was pur posely not to be effective. He was a has-been, singing a song that was out of date." Crosby, sometimes reticent to the press, talked easily and en thusiastically about the role that some critics think moves him into the rank of first-class dra matic actors. "You can't, play musicals all the time," he said. "In every other picture I was always just playing myself, playing Bing Crosby. This picture gave me a chance to play another char acter. . "Sure, I'd love to be nomi nated for an Oscar. It would be kheart-warming to be recognized that way. But I don't see how anybody can top Marlon Brando for 'On the Waterfront'," Crosby is so happy with his part he even has promised to attend the premiere of "The Country Girl" in Hollywood Dec. 21, the first time he's bothered to appear at one of his pictures in more years than he can re member. "Usually when a picture is finished I just get .out and get away," said Bing.
