Stassen, ex pects lull agreement with Treas ury Secretary George M. Humph rey in a new Asian aid program despite reported - differences be tween the two. . He said the program should be ready for presentation to'Coft fress in March and that he has already been in touch with con gressional leaders on the matter. Said 'Great Challenge' Stassen has been plugging the program as one of the "great challenges" of our time. How ever, Humphrey has said no program yet exists as agreed administration policy, prompting speculation that he is not sold on the idea. - , . Stassen told a news conference yesterday that the administra tion is agreed on the need for a program to develop the free na tions of Asia and is agreed "that there will be a program."- So far, no price tag has been placed on the program. But Stas sen said it clearly will not be in "Marshall plan dimensions." Under that recovery program, the United States spent about 515,000,000,000 x in seven years. Busch, 32, Sioux City, la. Busch's companion,. 18-year-old Anne Stanton,' had crawled free of the wreckage but could not locate it afterwards. ' Soviets Reply. To . ' Smith Arrest Attempt Berlin (U.R) Berlin's Soviet commander, Maj.'- Gen'.-- P. A. Dibrova, said today a Red at tempt to arrest U. S. Sen. Mar garet Chase Smith in East Berlin two months ago was due to a misunderstanding. Maj. Gen. George Honnen, the U.S. commandant, said a letter was received from the Soviet general in answer to an "Ameri can protest of the incident. Dibrova said "I consider it necessary to state that the inci dent was the result of a misunderstanding. Post Office Urges Early Yule Mailing The Post Office department remyided postal patrons 'today that on Christmas day last year no mail was stacked undelivered in post offices anywhere in America. It is hoped to give this same fine service again this year, the department said, but it will heed the assistance and : cooperation of all those using the mails to do so. ! The department's chief plea was to "Shop Early Mail Ear ly." If this is done generally, the report said, pre-Christmas postal, service will be prompt and efficient. Aid To Education Stall Charged at CIO Convention Los Angeles (U.R) The CIO convention . charged President Eisenhower with deliberate stall ing on . federal aid to education today and demanded immediate action by . channeling' royalties from offshore oil 'developments into educational needs., In a resolution adopted unani mously on the convention' floor yesterday, delegates charged the administrator's series of state and national conferences on the subject were merely "a method of stalling for .two more years." Mor , Overcrowding Seen VMore talk and no action for two long years means that our schools will become more over crowded and education for our children less adequate," read the resolution. " - The nation will need at least 600,000 new . classrooms and about 1,000,000 more teachers by 1960, the resolution further declared. More than 14 per cent of American teachers now re ceive less than $2500 a' year, it said. C - Gifts Sought for Patients in Oregon Mental Hospitals Salem A ; traditional appeal for Christmas gifts for the near ly 7,000 patients of Oregon's mental hospitals many of them forgotten at Santa Claus time has been issued by the Mental Health Association of Oregon. ' Mrs. W. p. Stevens, cnairman of the Christmas project, said gifts ' are urgently needed for many patients in Oregon's three mental hospitals the state hos pitals at Pendleton and Salem and . the Fairview Home at Salem. v . Christmas will be a dreary day for these people, many of whom are needlessly unhappy at a time, when a small gift of some sort would help brighten their outlook," Mrs. Stevens asserted. "For the past seven years, Ore gon citizens have responded gen erously, thus, making : a real Christmas for . the hospital pa tients." . Gift Suggestions Mrs., Stevens offered as typi cal gift suggestions such as fruit, candy, nuts, cigarettes, games personal items for women such as handkerchiews, . cosmetics, hair ribbons, combs, soap, mater ials, embroidery cottons, needle work , and books.
