As We Live
Daughter's Elopement
Is Cruel to Parents
To a parent, the marriage of
a son or daughter is one of the
most important events in his
life. To deprive the parent of
the privilege of sharing that day
with his child is one of the cruel
est things the child can do. One
young woman writes:
Q. "My parents cannot af
ford a wedding at this time. I
am engaged and we don't want
to wait. My father is very
close to retirement age and
still has a small mortgage to
pay on our house. I don't want
them to go further in debt just
to give me a wedding so a few
friends can get a free drink.
And I just don't want a recep
tion. They bore my fiance and
me, and the money spent 'on
a reception could be used for
a down-payment for a home of
our own.
"We have thought of getting
married without saying a
. word to anyone but our wit
nesses. This would hurt my
parents, as I am their only
daughter. But I am trying to
save; them financially. My
mother says that if I elope she
will never forgive me, but I
suspect that she would get

Santa paused to go into his
routine with a pair of boys
named Tommy and Bobby. They
wanted a steamroller, a tricycle
and a green duck. Santa promis
ed them all three items if they
behaved.
Boys Want Trains V
"Most girls ask for dolls and
boys usually want electric trains
and bicycles," Santa told me.
"Santa is like God to them.
Some are excited, others are
frightened. Parents are such
dumb clucks. They shouldn't
force a child to talk to Santa."
The rest of the year Conklin
does bit parts in pictures. "But
I never even notice the titles."
Recently he showed up on TV
with his former boss, slapstick
king Mack Sennett, to plug Sen
nett's new book.

Your parents are no longer

make the closing years of their
life unhappy this way? Besides,
dont you want them to accept
the man you marry as their son?
You certainly could not expect
them to do this if they felt he
had been primarily responsible
for your elopment.
You do not have to have a
