Sheppard's Brother Denies Demanding if Dr. Sam Was Killer ' Cleveland (U.R) Dr. Rich ard N. Sheppard denied flatly -.today that he ever had demand ed of his young brother, Dr. Samuel . H. Sheppard, whether "he had bludgeoned his wife to death. "Such a thougnt as that never crossed my mind," Dr. Richard testified on cross examination in .Dr. Sam's wife-slaying trial. Mayor J. Spencer Houk of Bay Village, a close friend of Dr. ;Sam, had testified as a state wit ness that he heard Dr. Richard ask the question shortly after the murder and Dr. Sam reply "Hell, no." ' The mayor said the question ing occurred in the den on the -first floor of the Sheppard home just after Dr. Richard had view ed the cruelly beaten body of .Marilyn Sheppard, 31, on her blood-soaked bed about 6:10 a.m. last July 4. Meaning and Crying '.' Dr. Richard, 38,-the oldest of the three Sheppard brothers, said he only told Dr. Sam that "Marilyn's gone. There's nothing X can do." He said Dr. Sam slid off his chair onto his face on the floor, moaning and crying and holding, the back of his neck. Dr. Richard said pictures of the body made by policemen and entered in evidence as state ex hibits showed the body "defi nitely'' .in a different position Bridges Ordered To Have Answers Ready for Hearing San Francisco U.R) Long shore leader Harry Bridges, who has been denying membership in the Communist party, for 20 years,was asked the question again yesterday as the govern ment began its fifth attempt in 15 years, to deport hrni. Federal Judge Louis E. Good man ordered Bridges to prepare answers to two dozen questions within two weeks at a pre-trial hearing - on , the government s civil suit to strip him of nis citizenship. . - Accused of Fraud The Australian born leader of the International Longshore men's and Warehousemen's un ion is accused by the Justice de partment of getting his citizen ship by fraud in 1954 Ibyrfalsely swearing that he had not been, a member of the Communist party .in the preceding 10 years. The questions, presented- in true or false fashion, were de signed to speed the proceedings, although the actual trial was not expected to get underway. until next spring.. The government hoped to de termine which issues it must at tempt to prove at the trial and which ones -might be eliminated by admission. . Found Guilty in 1950 Bridges was found guilty by a jury in 1950 ' of having lied about his Communist affiliation when he obtained his citizen ship. The U.S. Supreme court subsequently set aside the con viction on grounds that statute of limitations had outlawed the perjury charge.' A from the way he first saw it. The defense contends police meddling changed the body's po sition. A defense contention is that a burglar, or someone intent on a sexual attack, killed her. Asked by Chief Prosecutor John J. Mahon to estimate how long she had been dead, he said at a "wild guess" she must have been dead "18 minutes to one half hour, and it could have been two hours' Dr. Richard, on direct exami nation, had testified it would have been impossible for a man wearing Dr. Sam's khaki trou sers to stand alongside the bed and beat Marilyn to death with out getting spots on the pants. The soiled, faded trousers held in front of the witness by de fense attorney William J. Cor- rigan, had no spots on them. The doors and walls of the murder, room were . splattered with blood. Dr. Richard said that his own knee was above the top of the mattress as he stood at the bedside trying to take the dead woman's pulse, and that it would be "absolutely impos sible" for blood not to be splat tered on the murderer's trous ers. - - , " Steelworkers Called in Probe For Communists -Washington (U.R) Senate investigators summoned Bethle hem, Pa., steelworkers today for a public hearing in Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy's renewed hunt for Communists in defense plants. It was uncertain whether Mc Carthy would attend the session or stay home to nurse his ailing elbow. He failed to appear to hear the same witnesses in closed session Monday. v Sen. Charles E. Potter (R- Mich.) and Karl E.' Mundf (R S.D.), only subcommittee mem bers who attended Monday's hearing, listed Herman E. Tho mas of Allentown, Pa., as to day's first witness. Other -witnesses, they said, were all em ployees of the Bethlehem Steel Co. plant at Bethlehem. : Thomas testified in October, before the Senate . Internal Se curity subcommittee, that he had been an -Undercover FBI in formant., ia the "Communist Par ty. At that time he named some 230 persons as Communists. Democrats Not Expected . The. three ..Democratic ,mem: bers of the subcommittee, - who have often clashed with - Mc Carthy in the past, were not ex pected to attend today's hearing. They were also absent Monday and their offices reported they are out of "town. . Potter told newsmen that "more than one" of eight wit nesses heard in closed session Monday took refuge in the Fifth Amendment when asked about Communist activities. He would not say how many pleaded self incrimination, however. -. Potter said . "some" . of. Mon day's witnesses were dismissed and -.would not be recalled. A high Vatican source said the ailing pontiff wants to -make his Christmas Eve address from his third floor studio or the balcony, both of which overlook St. Peter's Square. Depends on Progress Whether the Pope can fulfill his wish depends on the degree of progress he shows in the com ing three weeks and on the ad vice of his doctors. . February Draft Call Made for 20,000 Men Washington (U.R) The De partment of Defense today is sued a February draft call for 20,000 men for the. Army, a cut of 3000 in recent monthly rates. A Defense Department spokes man said the 20,000 level is ex pected to prevail through next June. The Army has drafted 23, 000 a month since last July. ; Defense Department sources pointed out that Army reenlist ment rates have begun to show a slight uptrend which may par tially explain the reduced draft calls. Reenlistments in the Army totaled 9472 in October com pared with 8789 in September. Detours Available Over Snake River Salem (U.R) The route between Nyssa and Idaho points is closed because of a bridge out over the Snake river, the State Highway department said today in its report' of road con ditions. Detours are available by way of Ontario or Adrian. Construction might mean short delays for motorists trav eling the Columbia river high way, between Big Eddy four miles east of The Dalles and Ru fus. Short delays might also be expected on the Willamette highway seven miles west of Oakridge and on The Dalles California highway 12 miles north of Klamath Falls. Other delays may be expected on the Pacific highway from Myrtle Creek north four miles, and on the Oregon coast high way two to 14 miles south of Port Orford. Because of con struction, there is a mile of soft and difficult travel on the En-terprise-Lewiston highway. In the clearest waters of tropi cal seas there is no visible light at a depth of a half-mile.
