1 v iJ r -i K JIM STEVENS Cheers for Collage Grove A full-page picture in color of the interior of First Presbyter ian church, Cottage Grove, Ore., glorifies Page 35 of the Decem ber number of McCall's. The de sign is by former Portlander, Pietro Belluschi now head of the architectural school of the Massachusetts Institute of. Tech nology who selected Sitka spruce as an ideal sanctuary fin ish wood. The Cottage Grove church pic ture, with others in the maga zine, is significant of the amaz ing prospect that is widening away and reaching far in future uses of forest products. The copy states that an estimated 100,000 churches will be built in the per iod 1955-75. This new construc tion may amount to $8,000,000, 000 all in addition to the re modeling, expansion and repairs on the existing 295,000 churches of the country. The Wood Way In recent years church con struction has regularly exceeded the forecasts of the experts. In 1953, it amounted to $474,000, 000" breaking all records. Again the record is cracking with $585,000,000 worth of new church construction estimated for 1954. The forecast for 1955 is $675,000,000. More money is being expended for new church es than for new schools. The monumental type of church structure is going the way of the monumental school in modern architectural design and specifications. The glued-up laminated lumber arch is econ omical and efficient and pro vides a soaring roof for the nave of even a small wayside church. Wood blends beautifully with other materials everywhere. Church memberships are ris ing toward . the 100,000,000 mark. Experts expect the num bers to swell to 125,000,000 by 1975. Such an increase would call for 75,000 more ministers, priests and rabbis than we have in the U.S.A. of today. More houses for the clergy will be re quired, with the new churches. Religious education, which al ready has 35,000,000 young peo ple enrolled, in 275,000 church schools, is expanding rapidly as the results of the wartime and post war "baby boom" grow on. The University Presbyterian church of Seattle sent out 550 canvassers one Sunday after noon recently, and they returned at nightfall with pledges for $350,000. This one church plans to provide for a Sunday school attendance of 5,000. The Devil's Own Only 26 of each 100 persons in the Pacific Northwest are church members, now in 1954, while nationally 60 persons in every .100 "belong" to some kind of church. Dr. Billy Graham coul Dr Billy Graham could scarcely believe his ears when he was told the sad news during his Northwest . visit. He had not noticed more wickedness around these parts than in Chicago, where practically everybody goes to church sinners and saints alike. In the older population cen ters new church building was going strong even before World War II, because most of the church structures were very eld erly and . kept falling apart through the 1930s. People; gen erally enjoy "attending services" in the handsome new churches of wood construction in modern designs that have replaced so many of the ugly rockpiles that passed for churches 20 years ago. Most of the visitors return, ev entually to worship, then to join. We'll catch up with the Mid west trend in time. Northwest people are not doomed to ' re main the devil's own for aye. Some producer should make a picture based on the life of Beverly Nina O'Malley. Why? Well, Bev erly, still a comparatively young woman, has had thirteen hus bands. How she acquired so many spouses and what were the steps leading up to thirteen sepa rations should be interesting to our countrywomen. It could be titled "L Married Thirteen Men." Sidelights The United States has had only one bachelor president, James Buchanan. Oh, so you knew that? All right,- smart fellow, tell us the name of the United States President who married twice and had fourteen children . Hy Schneider, who learned the art of piemaking as a chuck wagon cook in Montana, say the only way to make pie crust that is worth while is to mix the dough in ice cold water. Call this to the attention of your wife. ! Please Note The great, big, blue eyed baby type of female is lovely to look at but very expensive to support. The women with large eyes of any color are usually intensely in love with luxury and cannot be happy without it. If a big eyed woman hasn't a mink coat she considers the lack of same a major tragedy of her life. 4 By ELIZABETH HURLOCK. PH.D. Unhappy Wives Make 'Mama's Boy' Sons It is natural for a boy to love his mother, especially when his father is away from home so much that he has few, opportuni ties for companionship with his father. How this can affect the boy's adult life has been describ ed by the young woman' who writes: (Q) "Men in general are pretty much 'mother's boys aren't they? I am nearly 30. For the past 15 years, my father has been going around with an upside-down smile, mourning his mother's death. He was very much of a mother's boy. It seems that all the boys I went with when I was young were mother's boys. As fate would have it, I mar ried one and have lived to re gret it. Isn't it about time that the fathers of sons began io show the mothers of sons just how much more important their role of wife is? It seems to me that is where the real mistake lies. I would like your opinion on this subject." ' (A) Psychiatrists would agree with your observations that the secret of the mother-son complex lies in the frus- V' " "TH in ' liiim" Dr. Hurlock trations of the wife. True, the role, of a wife is or should certainly be more- impor tant than that of a mother just as a man should be a husband first, father second. By this I do not mean that either men or women should ne glect their children, or should consider their parental obliga tions as of little importance. Far from it. The job of being a par ent is one of the most important in life and should be treated as such. , However, when a woman does not find her role as a wife satis fying, she often turns to her son and gains satisfaction from his love and admiration. She would rather receive this love and ad miration from her husband, but often he is too occupied with his business to give her the love she needs to be happy, or he devel ops an interest in some other woman. Not all men, fortunately for the young generation, must act as husband-substitutes for their mothers. There are many happy wives who do not have to tie themselves emotionally to then- sons. You have just had a run of bad luck that has warped your point of view and has made your life unhappy. (COPYRIGHT 1954, GENERAL FEATURES CORP.) SAVE MONEY! DO IT YOURSELF! T o r m e, a one - time boy prodigy of the music world, now is pushing 30 and thinks it's time for a change. In ' ,14. "V ! Aline Mosby stead of crooning in his velvet foggy voice, he has added drums and, amazingly, good comedy to his nightclub act at the Cre scendo that currently is the top attraction on the Sunset Strip.' It may be a blow to his 40 young fans who showed up at the stage door in their racy MG sports cars the other night, but Torme labels the young sighers as "fickle." "I never want to lose their fol lowing," he added quickly. "But I don't want to cater strictly to them. With them it's Eddie Fish er one year, me the next, Vic Damone the next. "That's .why I have built a more mature act. I don't want anybody to ever call me Velvet Fog again. A New York disc jockey started that in 1947 and I never did like it. "The name has been a heckuva thing , to fight. It makes men cringe. That's why I play drums in my show," rattled Torme, who talks rapidly like a male Terry Moore. "Like the critics say, now my act is based on entertaining, not just singing." Music fans first remember Mel as an astounding composer of a hit tune, "Lament to Love," at the age of 14. In his teens he wrote the title songs for such films as "Count Fair," "Abie's Irish Rose" and "Magic Town." His "Christmas Song'' still is a Yuletide favorite. - After singing with the Chico Marx band in hie hometown Chi cago in the early . '40s, Torme sang with a trio and later struck out as a single. When each year brought more crooners as com petition he elected to grow into a "more mature, delicate" ap proach. "I even make my humor sadistic anything to get away from the Velfet Fog stuff," he said. "I've found that making the change from kid star to man star isn't as tough as from boy star to man star. Frank Sinatra succeed ed but several other singers haven't".; I feel Fin - succeeding, too. "Of course," added Torme, slapping his youthful face, "I'll always be stuck with this."
