To the Neverland of fantasy comes a realistic note as Christmas comes early this year to Heller Halliday, shown receiving: a United States Savings Bond from her mother, actress Mary Martin. Both are playing in the current Broadway musical production of James Barrie's immortal "Peter Pan." As Peter Pan, Miss Martin wishes that every boy and girl could receive a Savings Bond for Christmas. So she hopes that par ents will play Peter Pan to their children by giving them the Christ mas present for a brighter tomorrow a United States Savings Bond. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent - ,.:.".ii Hollywood (U.R) Danny Kaye, a celebrated comedian of multi-million dollar movies, next , month appears in theaters in a 20-minute picture in which his co stars d o n't even know who he is. The other players not only were ignorant of the fact the star Aline Mosby was a famous movie comedian, but the film had no script and Kaye had to pinch-hit as director. Danny's movie is "Assign ment: Children," a picture he made of his trip to see" children in the Orient receive care from the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. "We never dreamed the pic ture would be shown commer cially," the red-haired comic said today. "But now that it is, I hope it will acquaint people all over the world with the work UNICEF is doing. After all, children are the future of the world." Kaye's shortest picture start ed when he was asked by the UN to visit UNICEF centers in the Orient on his way liome from working in Africa. "I thought I'd take a camera along," Kaye said. "I went to Y. Frank Freeman (head of Paramount) and said, 'I was wondering ' He sent a movie camera and two camermen with me. , "I planned to turn over the film to UNICEF and they could do what they pleased with it But when we got back, Mr. Free man wanted to release the pic ture to theaters with the profits going to UNICEF." Kaye visited UNICEF centers in Burma, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Thailand There he watched UN workers give tuberculosis and malaria vaccinations, free milk and med ical care to thousands of young sters. At each village he worked up a crowd of children by danc ing like the Pied Piper at the UNICEF center. The UN made him an ambassador-at-large and he traveled as a diplomat, a rare honor for an actor. "The trip confirms my opin ion that children are the same the world over," he said. "If you make a fool of yourself in front of children, you become a child. They understand a fun ny gesture. They all understand the same language." Kaye spoke in his Paramount dressing room where he's start ing a multi-million dollar pic ture, "The Court Jester," a spoof on all those chain-mail medieval "horse operas. But the comic talked of his 20-minute movie for which he received no money. "It was a satisfying thing to do," he said, and added proudly, "it was my first directorial ef fort. Combine apple sauce, nutmeg and nutmeats. Add layer of ji.pple sauce mixture; repeat using 7 layers of crackers and 6 layers of apple sauce, ending with layer of crackers. Chill in refrigerator I several hours. Just before serving, cover with whipped cream.' Garnish with citron, cut in shape of holly leaves and red cinnamon candies. Slice and serve. Yields 6 servings.
