HIT BY METEORITE Mrs. Hewlett Hodges, 32, points
to hole in her ceiling made by' plummeting meteorite that
fell on Sylacauga, Ala. The object, six or eight inches in
diameter, ripped through her roof and struck her on the
hand. She is the first known person to be struck by a
missile from outer space. It may have been one of many
that fell from a 40-mile-high explosion that was visible in
three states. The Air Force sent it to laboratories in Wash
ington, but Mri. Hodges wants it back. -.

t: Have YOU a bachelorette in
your famiiy? Has she any spec
ial system of definitely de
termining whether a man she
meets is married or single? In
some European countries mar
ried men are distinguished from
bachelors by hyphenated' names:
They use their own surname
and their wife's maiden name
As for example, by this system
the name of Harry James would
be Harry James-Grable. That of
Joe DiMaggio, during his recent
marriage, would have been
Joseph Di Maggio-Monroe.. After
1he divorce, the Monroe would
be dropped. My name would be
Edgar Durling - Boisen. ; How
about yours, sir?

Viewing Again - ;
After a long summer and fall
vacation from television, I have
resumed " viewing: Best -thing I
have seen was Jack - Benny's
great performance in the comedy
titled "The Face Is Familiar." I
also liked the. Jack Carson show
the time George Gobel was on
it. Jack and George make
"great comedy combination. An
other program I h?ve enjoyed
is "Meet The Press." Some pro
grams I liked last year seem to
have - gone back considerably.
However, I will mention no
names. Perhaps they "Will 're

To top these off smartly are
many sweater, jersey and fabric

Having played for many Eisen

he was doing. ' ; v ;
He started the band off with
"The Old Spinning Wheel."
That's Mamie's favorite. The
band and the- assembled crowd
went through that with some of
the finest un-harmonic braying
in any hall anytime the Presi
dent and his lady adding to the
din, and clapping thereafter.
Then Barnee's band cut loose
with President Eisenhower's fa
vorite, ."I've Got Spurs That
Jingle, jangle, Jingle."
Well, the Eisenhowers thought
it . was swell. And they wrote
Barnee little notes " to ; say
thanks.
The Notes '
First to arrive was from the
President:
' "Mrs. Eisenhower and I join
in warm thanks to you and the
members of your orchestra for
your contribution to the Citizens
for Eisenhower rally , . . you
played so many of my 'favorite'
songs that the evening was a
truly happy one for both of us."
That was signed "Dwi'ght Eis
enhower." ,.
Mrs. Ike wrote a separate let
ter. She said:
"What a pleasant surprise to
see you in person at the dinner a
few evenings ago! As usual we
enjoyed your music immensely
our thanks and appreciation
to you for making the evening
such a warm, jolly one. My kind
regards to you and your wife," in
which the President joins me.''
.This was signed simply:
"Mamie Eisenhower."
I offered to buy the letters
from Barnee, just to see what
he'd say. He laughed and told
me I couldn't afford it. ' :
