(U.R) A survey of votes cast in the September primary election in Arizona might privide some clues for political experts and pollsters who sometimes get caught on. the end of a long limb on a "sure thing." . A total of 57.08 per cent of the 289,477 persons eligible to vote turned out at the polls aft er a dull, primary campaign. Some "experts'- basing their predictions on apathy in the pop ulation centers of Phoenix and Tucson, had forecast at best a 50 per cent turnout. The forecasters' apparent fail ure to look beyond Maricopa county, of which Phoenix is the seat, and Pima, where , Tucson is located, also , showed up in the explosion of a state axiom that to win, a candidate has to carry Maricopa, or Pima, or both counties. Robert Morrison, who won the Democratic race for at torney general, had an 8,000- vpte deficit in Maricopa and led by only a few hundred votes in Pima. But other counties threw support to him, and Morrison was determined the winner some 24 hours after the polls closed. Maricopa, center of urban population in Arizona, had a turnout of only 48.5 per cent. Pima, with the second largest city, had a 52.61 per cent vote. Trends Develop Late But the small counties, made up of farm and mine workers in the most part, showed consid erably more interest in the pri mary. Five of the remaining 12 Ari zona counties had turnouts of 80 per cent or better, and one Greenlee had 88.84 per cent of the voters go to the polls. Of the other counties, two had at least 73 per cent voter turnouts and the remainder ex ceeded 60 per cent. Most candidates were ready to admit that in the general elec tion, the vote cast in the 12 small counties would be a big ger factor than expected. The problem was being considered a key to the election by the en couraged Democrats, since the principal registration among Re publicans is in Maricopa and Pima counties. . But state observers were ad opting the viewpoint of Sen. Carl Hayden (D-Ariz.), who told reporters late in September that it was "too early" to get a clear picture of the Arizona political climate. Hayden, a member of the Senate or House since Ari zona became a state in 1912, said it often is difficult, to esti mate a trend until 10 days be fore an election. McCarthy Petitioners ' Will Reveal Numbers New York (U.R) The com mittee organized to secure 10. 000,000 signatures on petitions opposing the Senate censure of Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy said to day it would announce before a Madison Square Garden rally to night the number of signatures counted so far. The committee, entitled "Ten Million Americans Mobilizing for Justice," said it expected more than 22,000 persons to attend the rally but that it had not heard "one way or another" whether McCarthy himself would attend. McCarthy said in Washington he didn't kno-.v yet whether he would be able to be present. The committee said four lead ers of the petition campaign would speak in person and six others would address the rally by remote control from various parts of the country.
