I As We Live Parents Can't Afford Daughter's Big Dream Most young girls dream of themselves as brides and want to have large weddings where they will be the center of admiring and envious crowds. Should a mother permit her daughter's desire for a big wedding to bank rupt the family? (Q) "My daughter will ba 16 years old next month and is in the 11 in grade. For the past year she has been going steady and my husband and I gave our consent to her becoming engaged when she is 16. One day she told us she wanted lo quit school and work so she could earn some money for her wedding. We gave our consent, as she was driving us crazy very night about that. They were to be married when she is 18. ; ' . "Two days ago, she and her boy friend told us they want to be married in June. She wants a big wedding, and I have no money. I have, been ick for a long time and have a big debt of doctors' bills. We have two younger children and my husband's salary is not large. I would like her to have a nice wedding, but she gets very angry when I tell her we can't afford it. If she would wait until she was 18. we might see our way clear to giving her a big wedding. (A) Under no condition should you permit your daughter's anger to influence you. Ask the young man to come to see you. In your daughter s presence, ex plain to him how things are with you financially. By ELIZABETH KURLOCK, PH.D. Tell him that if he wants a big wedding, he must wait until your daughter has earned enough to pay the bill which, I can assure you, will be some time from now. If he is a sensible young man, he will be able to Dr. Hurlock convince your daughter that she is being un fair in asking you to make the sacrifices a big wedding would mean. Your . daughter's behavior is such that I question whether you and your husband will be wise to consent to her marriage riext June. She behaves like a spoiled child, and a spoiled child usually makes a failure of her marriage. Why not withhold your con sent, until your daughter proves, by her actions, that she is mature enough to assume the responsi bilities of marriage? Otherwise, you may find that you will have nev problems to face if her mar riage breaks up and she comes home to you with a child or two for you to help support.
