November 25, 1954 Families Gather for Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving day, 954, is be ing observed in Medford and the Rogue valley as it is throughout the United States with special church services and prayers of thanksgiving and festive family dinners. In almost every home the scene will be the same with families, large and small, gather ing around gaily decorated tables to feast on turkey and cranberry sauce, mother's best pickles and preserves and other delicacies, 'Several conereeations held a combined service at First Metho dist church this' morning, while others met for denominational services. The family of School Superin tendent and Mrs. E. H. Hedrick are gathered at the Hedricks' home on South Oakdale avenue today for dinner. Present will be ,the Hedricks daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rich ardson and daughters, Jan and Ann; another daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Work and daughter, Mary; their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Hedrick and chil dren, Billie and Elaine, Hugo, Ore.; Mr. Richardson's mother,' Mrs. Bel Richardson, the Hed ricks and their youngest daugh ter, Caroline. Irving Rau, mayor of St. Helens, Ore., and Mrs. Rau, are in Medford as Thanksgiving holi days guests of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul It. Smith, 2001 , Spring street, They will return north Sunday. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bow- ker, Central Point, will be din ner guests this afternoon of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Claypool, 2024 Bullock road. The Bowkers also observed Thanksgiving earlier while their son, Paul K. Bowker, a Navy electronics and radar man, was here on leave last week. He left here for Chin coteague, Va. The Claypools' son, Don Claypool, a military police man, sailed November 6 for Eng land after visiting here recently. Bob Wickman arrived this week from Anchorage, Alaska, to be here for Thanksgiving with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wickman, 226 King street. He is with a construction firm in the Alaska city, i At the Wickmans today also is Mrs. Marjorie Barnes, now of Portland. Mrs. Barnes, a former Medford resi dent, is a sister of Mrs. Wickman. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Powell, with their sons, Alvin, Delbert and George, all of Keno, Ore.; Mr. arid Mrs. Warren Haggard and son, Dale, Phoenix, and Mr. and Mrs.. Lynn Schoemaker, Los An geles, are guests at Phoenix to day of Mr. and Mrs. Dell Hain. Instead of preparing their tur key in the .traditional manner of roasting it in the oven, the Hains are preparing theirs today on their patio barbecue. , Mrs. Eva Smith and children, Ronnie and Kathleen, 415 Haven street, are at Mt. Shasta, Calif., to be with Mrs. Smith's brother, W. O. Alden, Mrs. Alden and their family. The Aldens are former Medford residents. Another family dinner will be at the home of Police Chief Charles Champlin Jr., and Mrs. Champlin, 621 J street. Together for the day and dinner will be Mr. and Mrs. Champlin and their daughter, Judy, Mr. Champlin's mother, Mrs. Jack Maasdem, and his aunt, Mrs. Beatrice Jones. , J Mrs. H. D. Howard and daughter. er, Mrs. Mabel Howard, all of Medford. . . " ' Mr. and Mrs. Fred Strang, 540 Pennsylvania avenue; have with them for a family dinner their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrp. Lee Brown, and their daugh ter, Becky, of Grants Pass, and Mr. Brown's mother, Mrs. Robert Sutton, and Mr. Sutton. Among the Thanksgiving visitors in Medford are Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Allen and daugh ter, Susan, Merced Island, Wash., who are guests of Mr. Allen's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Allen Jr., 48 Wind sor avenue. The William Peek family Saginaw drive, will have their Thanksgiving dinner today on the Shasta Daylight train en route to San Francisco. This morning the Peeks traveled by car to Klamath Falls where they met Mr. . Peek's twin brother, Donald Peek, and his wife, who is a sister of Mrs. William Peek. The Donald Peeks are from Portland. The four will spend the weekend at the Bay city. A family dinner will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Clogston, 2138 West Main street. Attending will be A. R. Clement, Mrs. F. R. Hag erty, Mr.: and Mrs. H. A. Cle ment, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Guches and son, Richard, ' t he Carolyn, John and Donald Mr. and Mrs. Larry Neeley, 44 North Peach street, will en tertain this afternoon for their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs., William Sweet Jr., and son, Douglas, and Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Sweet, and Mr. and Mrs. William Neeley. - . " - . , Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Wil son, 608Vi South Newtown street, are dinner guests today of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. DeMotte at Grants Pass. The Wilsons form erly lived at Grants Pass. Miss Edith Jacobs, Medford Plaza apartments, and the Jerry Kreischer family of . Spring brook road, are dinner guests today of the Nevin Applegates at Central Point. -. ? Hosts for a family dinner to day are Mr. and Mrs. Earl York, 820 East Main street. Their guests will be their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Marsh and two children, John end Bob, Mr. Marsh's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Marsh, and Mr. York's sister, Miss Laura York. Mr. and Mrs. Darel Huson will be hosts for. a family dinner at their home on Lindley street. At tending will be Mrs. Huson's aunt, Mrs. Jessie Rodwell of Hood. River, Ore., Mr. Huson's niother, Mrs. Ina Huson, Mr.-and Mrs. Arthur Phillips, Roy Huson, the Huson's daughters, Darellyn, and the Misses Margaret and Laura Mae Huson, home from Willamette university, and their guest, Miss Joan Lawson, Seattle, also a Willamette student. Miss Lawson is a Delta Gamma so rority sister of Miss Margaret Huson, and Miss Laura Mae is a member of Pi Beta Phi at the school. A family reunion and dinner! is planned for today at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Jewett in Central Point. Attending will be their sons and daughter, with their families including Mr. and Mrs. William Klope and son, Paul, Eugene; Mr. and Mrs. Hal Jewett and daughters, Grace and Gladys Ann, Springfield; Mr. and Mrs. Alan Jewett and daughters,- Sandra and Sherry; Med ford; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jewett . and children, Jimmy, Tommy and Anne, Medford. An other guest will be Mrs. Annice Wilson, Medford, mother of Mrs. Hal Jewett. The Jewett's second daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Snook, will dine in another family group but will visit with the Jewett family dur ing the day. Mrs. Janice Long, 1308 Queen Anne avenue, will have a dinner guests today her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James McGifford, Grants Pass; Mr. and Dr. ' and Mrs. Stanley E. Philips and sons, ' Craig and Scott, are guests today of Mr. and Mrs. Richard G. Phair and family, 424 Ardmore street. The two families have dined together on Thanksgiving day for several years past. Craig Philips is home from the University of Oregon where he is a freshman and a pledge of Sigma r Phi Epsilon. The Philips' oldest son, Douglas, a iunior at Washington State col lege and a Phi Delta Theta, is sDendme the holidays with friends in Washington. ...... Members Propose Extension Projects . At Meetinq of Unit Shady Cove At the last meeting of Shady Cove Exten sion unit members proposed proj ects for next year's program. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. K. Paulson, and Mrs. Ralph Lane, chairman, presided. Mrs. C. Brewer, vice-chairman, conducted the "question box" and Mrs. D. Larson, took charge of the recreation hour. Mrs. Wil liam Shepherd represented the unit at a health committee meet ing. ' The luncheon committee, serv ed a Boston baked bean rheal. ' .; Mrs.. O. C. Krotz sold Christ mas boxes as a benefit for the unit Mrs. Brewer won the day's prize. r ' : - " The afternoon was devoted to metals under the direction of Mrs. Paulson and Mrs. T. M, Littlef ield. Mr. Lovett is visiting a sister today at Pasa dena, and from there he will drive to Tucson, Ariz., to visit his mother. Miss Audrey Hite Wins DAR Award ': Phoenix : Miss Audrey Hite, a senior at Phoenix High school, has been named to represent the school in the state good citizen contest sponsored by the Daugh ters of the American Revolution. She was chosen by a vote of oth er students and by a separate faculty vote.
