TEJf MEDFORD (OREQOK) MAIL TRIBUKE Wtdaesdar, November 24, 1934 Eisenhowers New Plane Has More Safety Features Washington (U.R) Prest dent Eisenhower gets a luxurious new plane today equipped with everything from a refrigerator to a two-way radio telephone. Mrs. Eisenhower will christen the plane immediately before she and the President depart for August, Ga- for the Thanksgiv ing holiday and week end. In place of the traditional bottle of champagne she will use a borne of water from Colorado's Platte river, one of the President's fa vorite trout streams, in the christening ceremony. More Safely Equipment The plane, named "Columbine III" by the President's grand children, is a Lockheed Super Regional Forester To Talk for SAF ( J. Herbert Stone, Portland, re gional forester of the U. S. For . est Service, will speak at the De cember meeting of the Siskiyou chapter, Society of American Foresters, on Dec. 3, it was an nounce1 today. . The meeting will be at 7 p.m that day atvthe Ashland Elk's club. Stone, one of the nation's leadine foresters, is a member of the council of the SAF. His talk -will be on "The Forest and Land ' Management," and he is also expected to discuss the af fairs of the society. Thomas Dewey's Mother Succumbs Owosso, Mich. U.R) Mrs. Annie Dewey, mother of New York Gov. Thomas E. , Dewey, died in her sleep last night at her home here. . She was 77. ' Mrs. . Dewey, a widow, had complained of pains in her chest Tuesday. Her doctor prescribed medicine for her and she was more comfortable when she re tired. She apparently died short ly after getting into bed. The governor was in Miami, Fla., starting a vacation when word of his mother's death reached Albany, N. Y. : Dewey, it was reported, im mediately took a plane for Owosso. Constellation which is more powerful, faster and contains more safety equipment than two other planes named "Columbine the President has used. It includes a stateroom which the President can use as an of fice by day and as a bedroom by night. This is the room which contains the two-way radio tele phone as well as radio-teletype, The President's desk and a con ference table are also here. At night, two couches in the stateroom convert into a three quarter size bed. The decorating is in keeping with such luxury. The carpet of the presidential stateroom is of medium green rayon fabric. Tne side walls are covered with a pale green gabardine material. The furniture is of bleached wal nut. There is indirect lighting throughout plus individual read ing lights. For the crew and White House staff there.are two mid-cabin sec tions. In the "service" depart ment there is a complete galley, including the four cubic foot re-' frigerator. Kittens Mystify Laundry Truck Driver Louisville, Ky. (U.R) A. K. Turner, driver of a laundry truck, was mystified when two kittens repeatedly bedded down on the laundry bags in his lock ed truck overnight. " Every " morning for a week Turner found- the family's two kittens happily sacked out amid the sacks. He began thinking a neigh borhood prankster hafl a dupli cate key and was tossing the kit tens in nightly. So Turner hid in the truck one night to catch the culprit. About 10 p m. the kittens slid down a wire coming through a two-inch hole in the truck's dash board and, ignoring Turner, went to bed. 1 He said he had driven -the same truck for two years and never noticed the small opening the acrobatic kittens slipped through. (U.R) Anti trust laws are still helping not hurting the United States two economics professors have concluded. 1 The professors studied 25 ma jor court decisions in the last decade and said the Sherman Act has the same aim as always: "Unreasonably collusive or un fairly exclusive tactics must be condemned." Joel B. Dirlam of Connecti cut college and Alfred E. Kahn of Cornell reported their find ings in a book, "Fair Competi tion: the Law and Economics of Anti-Trust Policy." Since World War II, they said, a group of lawyers and business men have complained that the Sherman act is being radically changed, and that the deoisions are crippling the national econ omy. Dirlam and Kahn said these men were partisan "and their predictions of economic disaster erroneous." ' . - - Cancer Society NEW FIGHTER The Air Force unveiled this new supersonic fighter. plane, the F-1C1 Voodoo, designed to escort strategic air command atomic bombers or deliver atomic weapons itself deep in enemy territory. The Air Force refused to give any perform ance or other statistics about the Voodoo. It is shown in flight over Edwards Flight Test Center, CaL , Fast Reading Secret Simple Columbus, O. U.R) You can read faster if you think you can. The authority for this is Fred Kohl, who has taught a number of Columbus business people to read about 100 per cent faster than they did. The system is simple and the secret lies in psychology, Kohl said, as he explained his course for local business executives. "Once a man believes he can read faster, he can read faster," Kohl said. To teach faster reading, Kohl shows a series of Iff movies pre pared by Harvard University. The students are treated to read ing selections where they are torced to read as fast as the words come on the screen. With each film, the words come faster. "People who read faster retain more of what .they've read tlian slow readers," Kohl said. "A slow reader will read about two words at a glance. If he sees a phrase like 'The wandering boy' he may first see "The wand-' then '-ering boy." Neither of these groups means anything to him." But says Kohl, if the reader sees "The wandering boy" in one glance he has a complete thought. Kohl said that he tries to teach his classes to read a line in a book in one or two eye shifts in stead of half a dozen. Kohl, office training manager for the Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, said that students retain about 60 to 65 per cent of what they read. He added that by increasing the amount read. students retain more and learn more by reading more. Persistent Bird Builds Nest in Plane Louisville, Ky. (U.R) A small bird with a flair for per sistence ana punctuality went about nest-building the hard way, at Louisville's Standif ord Air field, , The bird, a sparrow or linnet. chose to build in the tail of a huge airliner which arrived at the field at 1:30 p.m. each day. as soon -as the plane taxied to a stop, the bird began carrying pits oi siraw ana otner materials into the tail section. It worked busily for three hours, until the plane took off at 4:30. It went back to work when .the 1:30 plane returned next day. The airline does not assign the same plane to the-afternoon flight each day, but the bird al ways waited for the 1:30 flight Officials checked each plane's mechanical equipment before each takeoff,: to. make certain the small tenant had not dam aged the tail section. : On March 6, 1836, the Alamo fell with 187 Americans, includ ing Davey Crocket, killed. SCIENCE AT WORK New York U.R) Manychem ical secrets of how we live our spans in more or less good health, are locked in the ever changing fluids of our bodies, and in this connection a scien tific study is being made of how camels do it. It is all very well to say camels store the principal fluid which we put into our bodies (water in various forms and guises), but it doesn't give us any precise or useful chemical information on the how of it. ' We store water, too. Some 97 per cent of our blood is water; our "ground substance" is large ly water. And this brings us to Evans Blue, a term that prom ises to give fame to Dr. Herbert M. Evans, of the Institute for Experimental Biology, Berkeley, Calif., and to a chemical which comes out- of the dahlia (and other plants) and is called inulin. Evans Blue is a dye which does nothing chemically to other fluids, particularly blood, except dye it, and other fluids do noth ing to it chemically either, ex cept' dilute it. How Blue Works " Inulin, a starch-like carbohy drate, will go through the blood stream and through the kidneys without the cells paying it any attention, or it paying them any heed. Dr. Kurt Schmidt-Nielsen of Duke University is using them to eet at the secrets of camels in the Sahara desert. In human medicine, they're ' "diagnostic asents" and come from the War ner-Chilcott Laboratories which specializes in chemical helpers for the doctor. Now, take Evans RliiP. It works on the simple idea of dilution. In stages nf growth-and of distress, it is watery; at other times it is rath-J er iellv-like. Evans Blue stains water deeply; it stains a gel but slightly. A Blue test of any giv en area of connective tissue can give a clue to what gives there, As for the carbohydrate out of the dahlia chemically the body doesn't need or want it. It goes racing through, unchanged and thus chemically recognizable, The kidneys don't detain it, so by measuring the inulin that was put in against the inulin which comes out, you can tell how the kidneys' filters are do ing and, if they haven't been doing well, get an idea of why. The hope is that Evans Blue and inulin will, lay bare how camels handle their body fluids so efficiently. That may be use ful to man, or it may not be. The authorities agree that the camel is among the most infin itely stupid of beasts. No one loves camels; least of all the people nearest to them. GRANTS PASS OREGON : Across Caveman Bridge v At South End Logger Fined by Court On No-Permit Charge Marvin Hogue, 1056 Barnett rd., who pleaded guilty is dis trict court on Saturday to oper ating logging equipment without first obtaining a state permit, was fined $25 and $5 costs, ac cording to court records. The logging operation was about four miles southeast of Shady Cove, near Indian creek, and occurred on Nov. 10. The complaint charged that the. op eration was within one-eighth mile of forest land and in viola tion of state law. - Robert A. Stokes, State Patrol, signed the complaint. Pearl Fishing Due Off Coast of India Denies Claim of Cioarelte Blame ' New York U.R) The Ameri can Cancer Society denied today that it has claimed cigarette smoking is "solely responsible for the alarming increase of cancer of the lungs." Dr. Charles S. Cameron, the society's medical and scientific director,: issued the statement in reply to a charge made by E. A. Darr, president of the R. J. Rey nolds Tobacco Co. Eggs in One Basket Darr claimed that the society had "put all its eggs in one bas ket and centered its attack on the cigarette industry." "it is not true that the Ameri can Cancer Society is centering its attack on the cigarette in dustry," Dr. Cameron said. "We center our attacks only on can cer and with the support of the public we shall continue to do so regardless of where the chips fall." ' The society's position, accord ing to Dr. Cameron, is that an association exists between cig arette smoking and lung cancer. Nationalist Bombers Batter Red Positions Taipei, Formosa (U.R) -Nationalist bombers battered Com munist positions on Toumen Is land for the" fourth consecutive day of pre-dawn raids today. The World War II B25 Billy Mitchell bombers aimed at gun emplacements on the northeast tip of the island in the strategic Tachen groutf 200 miles north of Formosa. Nationalist sources said all planes returned safely to base after carrying out "very good" strikes against the enemy posi tions. The weaving of Harris tweed is entirely a cottage industry, says the National Geographic society. To meet standards set by the Harris Tweed association, the. cloth must be made from f'pure virgin wool produced in Scotland, spun, dyed and finish ed in the Outer Hebrides and handwoven by the islanders at their own homes. s ENJOY . . . Recent investigations by the state fisheries department have disclosed the existence of fully developed oysters in the "pearl banks" of Tuticorin, a east coast port south of Madras. . Survey carried out in Novem ber, 1952 struck a large shoal of "spats" unmatured pearl oys ters. Later expeditions confirmed that his shoal was maintaining its strength. , Before beginning operations, two more inspections will be made, one in December this year and another in January. There are about 40 main "pearl banks" over a 100-mile stretch of sea from Cape Comorin to Tranquebar in the Gulf of Mannar. No pearl banks lie on the west coast, except a minor one in the Gulf of Cutch. Peter Devadoss, deputy direc tor . of fisheries, told newsmen that the "Indian pearl is the fin est of its kind in the world.
