TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE : Tuesday, IToTember 23, 1934 Thick Fog Slows Traffic in Portland Portland U.R) A thick fog slowed air and auto traffic in the Portland area for the second straight day today. , Firemen, answering one call, had to run ahead of the truck with flashlights because fog was so thick. ' The airport was "socked in" most of the night except for a three-hour, period , shortly after midnight,, slowing, the new three-cent mail airlift. It was foggy as far south as Medford. Motorists apparently were driving cautiously as no major accidents were reported. It was the second time since 1942 the city's harbor was quar antined for that reason. Ships will be placed under restrictions in an effort to eliminate any rat population moving to or from a vessel. ; The U.S. Public Health Serv ice quarantine order was re ceived by Ray G. Young, deputy collector of customs. Sheppard and his wife moved from a double bed into a room with twin beds after their visit last March to California, where Dr. Sam spent a week with pert Susan Hayes, the Sheppard maid testified .today. The defense in Dr. Sheppard's murder trial immediately coun tered by putting Mayor J. Spen cer Houk of Bay Village into Mrs. Sheppard's bedroom. Defense attorney ,Fred W. Gar mone established in questioning the maid, Mrs. Eleanora Helms, that Houk, who lived a few door away, was in the habit of coming and having coffee while Dr. Sam was away at the hospital. Went to Bedroom - : Once, on a, day when pretty Mrs. Sheppard, 31, -was sick last April,' the mayor came in and went immediately to' -her bed room, Mrs. Helms testified. She said she heard a low mumbling inside the room but that Houk only stayed "about a second." . "You knew that Mayor Houk Had free run of the Sheppard home, didn't you?", Garmone asked.;.,- :, "V "I couldn't say," the maid re plied. . . . .. . ,- ' The following witness, the de tective who dusted objects, in the Sheppard home for fingerprints soon after the murder, implied that the murderer had used a cloth or. sandpaper to wipe away his fingerprints. ..u '..v :.".-w ." Peculiar Lines Noticed Detective Michael S. Gr?bow ski, 40,; of the Police Depart ment fingerprint section testi fied he noticed .some "very pe culiar lines" on the top, front and . sides of the living room desk, on two metal boxes on the living room floor near the desk and on the den desk. i The lines were as if "someone took a fine piece of sandpaper and wiped right through," he said. Ashland and Crescent City, Calif., men's bowling teams broke even Sunday in matches played at the Medford Bowling lanes, while Crescent City wom en, aided by handicaps, won two matches from Medford ladies. The Ashland men took one se ries 2582 to 2378 with Jack Col- ley pacing the way with a 204 game and 558 series.' Crescent City won the other test 2813 to 2466. One California kegler, whose full name was not listed on the score sheets had a 222 game and 595 series. Frank Dris- coll headed Ashland with 194 and 519. Other Ashlanders were Bud Curtis, John Kaufner and Chuck Adkins. .. ine Meaiora ladies lost a three lame series 2271 to 2223 and a two-game match 1672 to 1639. Claudia Lowd of Medford headed . the women in both matches with a 189 game and 504 series in one and 197 and 365 in the other.
