Nationalist Chinese bombers blasted Communist invasion buildup centers west of the Tachen -islands early Saturday: Ten American-built Mitchell bombers protected by National ist fighters bombed Toumen island which lies between the Nationalist-held Tachen island and the Red-held China main land. ; ... ' . Returning pilots claimed di rect hits on Communist gun po sitions and troop barracks. The Nationalists said all their planes, returned safely to bases on For: mosa. About noon the Communists retaliated with a raid by three Red bombers, escorted by a group of fighters on Peishan island south of the Toumen island target bit by the Nation alists. . . . -- ' ' Gable Laughs Off Romance Rumor . Possibility To Mai or of Bi-Partisan Policy Approach Issues Continues To Diminish Hong Kong (U.R) Clark Gable shrugged off with a laugh today rumors that a romance is brewing between him and curva ceous Marilyn Monroe. . Publicity man A. L. Hix said Gable denied Hollywood gossip about himself and the blonde actress, who divorced Joe Dir Maggio Oct. 27. Miss Monroe met Gable for the first time at a party celebrating the completion of her latest pic ture, the night before she. was hospitalized for minor surgery. ; Hix . said the two "danced a number of times and that's all there was to it." Democratic majorities were elected to . the 84th Con gress and the1 area of likely bi partisan policy approach to ma jor issues has shrunk with each passing day. "'. Most domestic questions ap pear to be deiimteiy outside the limits of bi-partisanship. How ever much President Eisenhow er might like to team . up with Democrats on some issues '-tariff and trade for example conservative Republicans would balk at that. Martin Short and Sweet The limits of bi-partisan ap proach to urgent questions be gan last week to show firm pol itical' boundaries when Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr., spoke his mind here. Martin, a veteran conservative , from Massachu setts, is slated to be Republican minority leader in the next Con gress when hi surrenders the speakership to Rep. Sam Ray burn (D-Tex.). Martin was short and sweet. He said bipartisan ship should be limited to foreign policy, and national defense. He said to extend it would destroy the two party system. That was just one way of say ing that many Republican con servatives, were disturbed in the 83rd Congress by what they re gorded. as . President Eisenhow ers tendency to go along with some, of .the policies held over from the previous Roosevelt and Truman administrations. Conser vative Republicans do not want any such bi-partisan agreement on domestic questions between the Democrats and the White House. ' Rayburn Promises Changes Rayburn and other Democrat ic leaders quickly took' Martin up on his proposition. They haye no intention of permitting Mr. Eisenhower to get the! jump on them with a legislative pro gram, even though some parts of it might not be distasteful to Democrats. So Rayburn last week said the new Demociatic Congress quickly would rip into the tax laws evidently expect ing to show that the 1954 Re publican Revenue act was load ed for the big interests and un fair to the common man. Rayburn also promised a new farm bill, pay hikes for govern ment clerks and a three-year ex tension of the Reciprocal Trade act. There will be considerable Democratic pressure for labor legislation to modify the Taft Hartley act in favor of union labor. The public-vs.-private el ectrical power issue already is a partisan political sizzler. ... . Mr., Eisenhower has made some urgent moves for a bi partisan approach to foreign and national defense policy. Demo cratic and Republican congres sional leaders met with him last week on that. But Rep. Carl Vinson (D-Ga.), already js in with plans to step up naval ship building and Air Force expan sion, to raise armed forces pay and to do considerable building of servicemen's housing. , Vinson will be next season's chairman of the House Armed Service - committee, a spot in which he is tremendously effec tive by reason of long past ser vice. Vinson's plans will cost money. They are a fair sample of more to come from other Democratic sources, especially in the Senate where Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo.), is a presi dential entry with firm objec tions to past Eisenhower admin istration moves to cut defense spending. - : - v Any considerable Democratic pressure which is almost sure to come for bigger spending on national defense would be likely to blow bi-partisanship in that area sky high. The Eisen hower administration is up against the problem of balanc ing the budget, and national de fense is where some cuts must be if the job is accomplished. Foreign Policy Remains With domestic questions con siderably vetoed as an area of bipartisan operation and bi-partisanship on national defense shadowed by a likely dispute over spending, there remains for eign policy. Chances of consistent bi-partisanship Hn foreign policy are relatively good. But as has been pointed out from time to time, to obtain bi-partisan agreement on a policy, that policy must be stated ' in simple and under standable language. , There al ready is a great deal of bi-partisan agreement in Congress and will be in the next on the gener al objectives of United States foreign policy peace, flour ishing world trade, improve ment of the lot of backward nations, a stronger Western Eur ope, better defense in Asia. ! Dispute over Details -; But there is .considerable dis pute as to detail. Senate Major ity Leader William F. Know land (Calif.), has been needling the administration about that. Over the week end he said in an interview that he had access be cause of his job to information the public lacks. He predicted a major Chinese Communist of fensive somewhere in Asia with in a. year and he wants to know what the administration intends to do about it. . :. He remarked that the Eisen hower administration has no an nounced policy as to defense of little ; Quemoy, a Nationalist Chinese island near Formosa.
