the movies to
day. ,

dity of TV
when she was
ViirpH at "Miss
Aline Moshr color TV" to
sit in front of color cameras.
But when the cameras had
the colors and lines sorted out
and the show flashed into mil
lions of living rooms, Marjorie
could no longer . be seen. She
was merely the camera focus
test.
, A This mishap was par for the
course, as Marjorie has behind
her a record hard luck story.
- But the waste of face finally
came .to the- attention of 20th
Century Fox talent scouts and
somebody hustled over to NBC
to see what she looked like. The
result is another Cinderella sign
ed to a contract, despite the fact
she has never acted before, and
already assigned roles in two
pictures, "Daddy Long Legs"
and "A Man Called Peter." .
First Lines
"At last my first lines of dia
logue," exclaimed Marjorie to
day as she was being fitted for
costumes in the : hectic studio
wardrobe department.
"But I don't mind my experi
ences I don't call it a real
struggle. It's good for a kid to
get out on her own."
Only a year ago the 19-year-old
beauty was a poor girl in
Upper " Black . Eddy, Penn., a
town of 600.
Like Marilyn Monroe," Mar
jorie had spent her early years
in a succession of foster homes
because her , divorced . mother
was ill. ,
.During high school she work
ed as a baby-sitter, cocktail serv
ice waitress and cleaning maid
to pay for her piano lessons at
the Philadelphia Conservatory
of Music. She used to faint regu
larly from the hot coffee urns
at the restaurant.
"I wanted to be a concert
pianist," she said. "My friends
convinced me I could save more
money for my studies if I model
ed in New York."
Her first modeling . job was
wearing a fluffy yellow evening
gown in the New York Thanks
giving : Parade. She got a two-
and-a-half month siege of pneu
monia. Nobody told her to wear
long underwear.
Hot Light
On her second modeling job
a hot light crashed on her head.
She was in the hospital four
days with concussion.
Finally someone at NBC saw
her photo from the modeling
agency and she won that TV
job. Marjorie reported excitedly
to work, but when the shows
went on the air she was pushed
backstage. " .,
Then came the screen test. She
lost 18 pounds worrying about
it, but she won the contract.
So far only one mishap has
hit Marjorie in Hollywood. Her
first night in town she was tour
ing the city with her agent and
they ran out of gas.
"But we were in front of
Jimmy Durante's house,", the ex
small town waitress smiled. "My
agent took me in and introduced
me to Jimmy."

Dispute Between
Waterfront Unions
May Delay Ships
San Francisco (U.R) The
Matson Navigation Co. has warn
ed shippers , that Hawaii
bound goods may be subject to
delay as a result of a, dispute
between two water front unions.
- The conflict is between Harry
Lundeberg's Sailors Union of
the Pacific (AFL)' and Harry
B r i d g e s International Long
shoremen's & Warehousemen's
Union (Ind.) and it concerns car
go unloading rights. -Program
of Harassment
Shipping officials charged that
Lundeberg's SUP "had adopted a
program of harassment to force
employers to grant the SUP the
unloading rights. This has in
cluded delaying of ship depar
tures and refusal of sailors to
work overtime while in port.
Matson notified shippers that
it would be necessary for them
to stop deliveries of Hawaiian
bound goods directly to piers
without prior bookings.
"Present delays due to the
labor situation," Matson told
s h ip p e r s, "will undoubtedly
cause changes in receiving times
for the pier as well as changes
in sailing dates for the steam
ers." ; ,
It added that it will be "un
able to promptly book and ac
cept all cargo offerings for
Hawaii." .
Freighter Tied Up
The freighter Pacificus has
been tied up at San Pedro for
two weeks in the unloading dis
pute. Sailors, who customarily
work in San Pedro's harbor only
on the No. 3 hold of coastal ships,
were assigned to unload the No.
4 hold which is claimed by, the
ILWU.
Bridges had proposed that this
dispute and future ones be set
tled by a permanent arbitration
procedure but : Lundeberg re
fused. Lundeberg said that in the
absence of a dispute between
the SUP and the Pacific Mari
time , Association, . representing
the employers, there was no ma
chinery under its contract with
PMA for arbitration.

considered for a diplomatic ap
pointment to the American em

Reports that the defeated Re
publican senator was being men
tioned as a possible successor to
George V. Allen in the Indian
post were current in Washing
ton. Two other senators were
also reported as possibilities.
They were John Sherman Cooper
of Kentucky and Robert C. Hen
drickson of New Jersey. Both
are Republicans. yr

School Desegregation
Said Moving Smoothly

Foundation survey of ; 24 com
munities that have already acted
to end school segregation has
disclosed that in most
cases it it working out with
surprising" smoothness.
The study also indicated that
a firmly administered policy of
fairly rapid integration has usu
ally produced less friction than
a more hesitant approach.
The study, "Schools in Transi
tion," is based on spot surveys
of school integration i programs
in communities from New Jersey
to Arizona. ' ,
Summing up the findings of re
searchers in the 24 communi
ties, the report concluded that

been tried the typical outcome
has been its eventual accept
