II Buried ?reasurea Finding Hawaiian Stamps Reduces Cost of Vacation Dick had just returned from a vacation in Hawaii. "We had been there about three days," he said, "when I was in the shop of a Mr. Onrura as a clerk emptied a waste bas ket of old correspondence into a bin nearby. "Fortunately I happened to notice that a couple of the letters had stamps with a picture of an old Hawaiian king like one you showed me once and said was worth a lot of money. So I asked him if I might buy it, and Mr. Omura insisted on giving them to me. ( When I got back to the hotel I found one of the envelopes bad ten stamps in it, all unused. KEROSENE LAMP . I put a tape measure on it From the brass base to the lip of the glass chimney was an even 26 inches. 1 The lamp was not exactly what I had had in mind. But it would do. My problem was to get some kerosene lamps in a hurry. Nearly every kerosene lamp I had seen that day had been con verted for electrical use and thus rendered useless for its original purpose. Except for a couple of very small ones and the one I was now considering, I hadn't seen one that hadn't been al tered. I asked how much It was. 'LIBERTY' MISSPELLED ON HALF DIME "Is this a rare coin or isn't it?" the little man asked. The coin he shook out of an envelope was a half dime. I could tell at a glance it was iif good condition. Paul took a look at it through a magnifying glass. It was lying with the reverse side up. It had been circulated, but so slightly that even the letters of the motto "E Pluribus Unum" stood out clearly on the scroll held in the eagle's beak. The obverse side was equally clear. The draped bust of Liber ty, facing right, was flanked by seven stars on one side and six on the,other. I was about to comment on a slight nick in one of the stars and a little marring of the rib bon with which -the sidelocks of the Liberty head were bound VnV nrliAn TJonl nn 4 Via little man. "We got $600 for the batch, which means we had one of the best and least expensive Hawai ian vacations I ever heard of." PROBLEM SOLVED. "That'll be $15," he said. I protested that theprice was too high by half. He listened patiently. "All right, mister," he said. "You got a real bargain here This globe," pointing to the one which the chimney went through "is Dresden. The shank there rising from the brass base is real carrara marble, and the oil reser voir is real brass, too." ' Some days - later when my niece Judith heard what I got it for, she virtually accused me of robbing the storekeeper. , "I don't care if there isn't a mark to indicate who made it, this lamp is worth from $60 to $75 retail," she said "How rare do you mean," said the little man drumming on the counter with the fingers of his right hand. "Only 24,000 half dimes were coined in that year and this is one of an unknown number of them that has the wrong spelling of the word Liberty on. the ob verse side," Paul said. "See how it is spelled LIB ERTY," he said, pointing to the word. "Very well," said the little man, not looking at the spell ing but taking the coin. "And since it is so rare, how much is it worth to you?" "I'll give you $20 for it," said Paul. "Thanks," said the little man, putting the coin back in his pocket. "If I decide to sell, I'll let you know. Your competitor said it wasn't rare enough for him to offer more than $5 for it." Forest Operators, Woodland Owners Given Assistance Bids for construction of 10.2 miles of timber access road be tween Galice and Soldier Camp in western Josephine county will be received by the Bureau of Public Roads in Portland before 10 a.m., Dec. 2, according to the district forester for the Bureau of land management' in Med ford.. The project will involve most ly new construction along the North fork of Galice creek, ra ther than the reconstruction of the existing road as was origin ally planned. The new route will be nearly four miles shorter but it will involve higher construc tion costs per mile. The Bureau of Public Roads estimates that it will be necessary to excavate over 525,000 cubic yards of earth and rock and install over 6,000 lineal feet of culvert pipe. Plans and specifications may be examined by prospective bid ders at the office of the district forester in Medford, or the Port land office of the Bureau of Pub lic roads in the Morgan build ing.
