Plans To Impound " i m a a. m - Water in lanada Receiving Study Portland (U.R) Plans of three non-federal power agen cies to impound water in Canada to create greater power genera tion in the United States are now under study by five federal agencies. In a joint announcement, Col. L. H. Foote, North Pacific di vision engineer, and Dr. William A. Pearl, Bonneville power ad ministrator, said the non-federal the plans are being considered by the Army Engineers, the Fed eral Power Commission, and three Interior Department agen cies BPA, the Bureau of Rec lamation, and the Geological Survey. Washington Water Power Company Kaiser Aluminum Company and Puget Sound Util ities Council all are eying Brit ish Columbia sites for water storage at Mica Creek Arrow Lakes and Kootenay Lake. . If the plans materialize, after winning Canadian approval, the resulting stream regulation would increase United . Jones, presiding over the Russell Coun ty Circuit Court for a state-ordered cleanup drive, postponed sentence until uec o ana allowed Davis to go free under bond until then. .. ' Martin, 59, came back to Scot land from London after learn ing that Mrs. Martin was at tempting to collect money fr,om some of his p r e-w a r invest ments. - ' He disappeared from Brame ly, near Winchester, in 1944 dur ing a Nazi air raid.' Working for Army "I was working for the United States Army as a security guard in a camp near London one night when there was an air raid," Martin said. "I decided not to go home and my wife must have; decided I was dead. ' "For two " weeks I slept in parks and air raid shelters. Bombing was going on all the time. Maybe my mind became a bit unhinged. I was in a horrible state of nerves and decided to chuck it and get away from it all.' . But when she went to ' collect money from Martin's investments she was told that he had appeared the previous week and collected it himself: ' v " The puzzled woman went back home and on the following day received a letter from Martin asking that he be allowed to re turn to their house. His letter explained that the Ministry of National Insurance had contacted him about her claim for a widow's pension and that he did not realize he had been declared legally dead. Saturday renewed his at tack on the Army's "atomic cannon" as "a foolish invention, a sitting duck for 600-mile-an-hour airplanes." Anderson, who returned here from Washington Friday night for a brief vacation, said he plans to continue objecting to wholesale adoption of the can non "until others start to ques tion it too." The New Mexico senator charged Friday in Washington that the new super cannon is more useful as a parade show piece than as an instrument of war. .' ! - World War I Concept "The concept of the atomic cannon - belongs to the first World War," he said. "But we are hot going to be fighting War I or even World War II. The gun is defenseless by today's stand ards."; He said a second world war type . bazooka could knock it out.' Seaside Child Drowns In Necanicum River Seaside, pre. U.R) Cecil (Butch) Crrft, Jr., nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil R. Crift, Sr., Seaside, was drowned about 10 a.m. Saturday in the rain-swollen waters of the Ne canicum river here. Earnest Beagle and his son William, 4, drowned when the Piper Pacer plane of Bush Pilot Donald Johnson, Kenai, devel oped engine trouble nine miles north of Kenai while en route from Anchorage to Kenai and went aown in the inlet. Johnson quickly unfastened the seat belts of his three pas sengers and shoved Mrs, Flor ence Ramsey, Kenai, through the window of the plane. Then, with one arm clutching the wo man, Johnson swam 500 yards to shore and safety. Johnson immediately set ,out to aid the other two passengers but collapsed of exhaustion. Kefauver Attacks GOP Isolationists Washington U.R) Sen. Estes Kefauver charged Friday night that "isolationist elements" .led U. S. foreign policy astray for two years but said the adminis tration may now be on the road to "peace through co-operation." In a speech before the annual Congress of the Atlantic Union Committee, the Tennessee Demo crat praised the new pact to re arm Western Germany as a step in the right direction. But Kefauver criticized sharp ly past foreign policy and 6aid Secretary of State John Foster Dulles must now "regret" that he frightened our allies" last year with talk of "massive retalia tion." The senator said he be lieves that Dulles was influenced by "isolationist elements" who "still preach the doctrine of pre ventive war." He added that "I don't believe he (Dulles) thinks that way." U.R) An air man killed" in' the crash of a stolen B-25 Friday night was believed to be a flight engineer who boasted to a girl friend in a bar he could fly the plane and would "buzz the lounge to prove it," the Air Force said Saturday. A spokesman for Keesler Air Force base said authorities could not positively, identify the vic tim as a missing flight engineer because the body was "torn to fragments" whew the p 1 a n e crashed and exploded in the Gulf of Mexico only 400 yards off a resort beach. The name of the flight engin eer was withheld pending posi tive identification and notifica tion of next of kin. "The investigation revealed that the victim had boasted to a girl friend while in a Biloxi lounge that he could fly a B-25 and would come back and buzz the lounge to prove it," the spokesman said. ' ' "Reports from- witnessesindi cated the plane had flown over the area of the lounge just be fore it roared out to sea at low level and plunged into-- the water." ' - HE SURE WAS Cheyenne, Wyo.
