MAIN ster." The regional director, Clarence J. Rhode of Juneau, Alaska, said pilots flying over the lake have seen the fish swim ming far down in its depths. Permit on Cardboard Rhodes once gave a permit, written on a piece of cardboard to a pilot who wanted to dyna mite the lake in an effort to kill the mystery fish."- "But he never saw the , mys tery fish again and never used the permit," 'Rhodes said.' The Indian shamans say the critter is Gonakadet, which their legends describe as a large underwater creature with a head and tail like a wolf and a body like that of a killer whale. The legends mention Gona kadet over, and over. Some of the oldest petroglyphs along the Alaska and British Columbia coasts and even in Puget Sound depict the "fish god." Was Called 'Wasgo' Among the Haidasf Indians, who dwelt primarily . in the Queen Charlotte. Islands off the British Columbia coast, this same "wolf in whale's clothing" was called "Wasgo." The lake is situated in the weird country of southwestrn Alaska about where the Alaska Peninsula joins the rest of the territory. It is just north of the K a t m a i National Monument which abounds in active vol canoes and also contains the pe culiar Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. 1 Rhodes likes to think the lliamna fish is like the one that always gets away. Fossils May Point To Future of World Philadelphia U.PJ A Phila delphia scientist says fossils he has collected from along . the Mediterranean may help to tell what the world will be like 1J0, 000 years from now. Dr. Horace G. Richards, asso ciate curator of ' geology and paleontology at the Academy of Natural Sciences, returned re cently from a shell-collecting ex pedition intO( the middle of the Arab-Israel trouble area and the deserts and jungles of Africa. He said a study of the fossils collected may show them to be identical to fossils he's found in land from the Atlantic coast of this country. . 1 If this is true, lie said, it means the shorelines of the Med iterranean lands and America were similarly affected by the great glacial advances and re cessions hundreds of thousands of years ago. He added that it may help to indicate what the shorelines of ..the future , vill , be if, as is thought,, we're heading toward the climax of an "inter-glacial stage." This-stage was .described es a time when, the glaciers of the north will melt enough to raise the sea level- throughout the world dozens of feet. Dr, Rich ards aid that if and when that happens it is going ta swamp some of our coastal cities and ports. Corvallis, Ore. (U.R) Ev ery youngster who has tramped through the woods : knows the cones from everygreen' trees make good throwing. "Rut what most of them don't know is that the cones are worth money. . ' The U.S. Forest service is pay ing up to $2 a bushel for Doug las fir cones. ".' The cones contain tree seed. This seed is taken from the cone .and distributed to farmers and other forest land owners for use in reseeding cutover lands and other bare forest areas. The service says the harvest ing of forest tree seed is becom ing as much of an industry in the Pacific Northwest as that of any other farm crop. ' -V i Rex Wakefield, supervisor of the Siuslaw National forest, says $2 a bushel is being paid for Douglas fir cones, with slightly higher prices for some other evergreen varieties. Today's students are better, in such ways as being able to express themselves, etc. but are poor in spelling. . A square dance party, will be held at the hall on November 27. A potluck supper was held be fore the opening of our Grange. (U.R) Two Powell County oil field workers were cutting dowrt a white oak tree when they heard a hissing sound and smelled natural gas. One of them, Dewey Campbell, said he struck a match and the gas burned three 'of four, min utes, sometimes asv high at 15 inches.
