X 1. 3 MISSIONARY TO SPEAK Shown above is the Rev. Dick Hills, missionary from Formosa, who will speak today at 7:30 p. m., at the First Presbyterian church. The speaker has lived also' in Communist China and knows present conditions there. He was formerly with the China Inland mission and when condi tions made it impossible for him to return to Communist-held China he went to Formosa. He was invited to go to Formosa by Madame Chiang Kai-shek to start the Orient Crusades. The public is invited to tonight's meeting. The Rev. Willis Loar, president of the Medford Minis terial association, will pronounce the invocation. The Rev. i Ted Goodwin will read the scripture; Carl . Unruh will sing and lead the music, and Dr. D. K. West, pastor of the church, will lead in prayer. Court Martial ... Hears Training Methods Praised : Augusta, Ga. U.R) Super ior officers of a second lieuten ant being tried qn brutality charges by a general court mar tial have come to his defense by praising theeffectiveness of his stern training methods. Two colonels of the Camp 'Gordon, Ga., command testified as first defense witnesses late yesterday at the trial of 2nd Lt. Charles C. Anderson ! on 17 counts of humiliating and har rassing trainees of . his Army company. ". Excellent .Officer Following prosecution testi mony of bizarre disciplinary methods Anderson allegedly used, the veteran of front line action in Korea was praised as an "excellent officer" by Col, James O. Wade and Col. Morris B. Montgomery. ' A' late prosecution witness, Pvt. James Blout of New York, told of being ordered by Ander son to "bury" a fellow trainee who fell exhausted from doing push ups. Blout said he shoveled sand over all but the mouth and then placed an improvised cross in the trainee's teeth. Other witnesses testified about such alleged disciplinary measures as forcing half-clad trainees to perch in trees and shout, "I am a bird," take "sand baths' or do exhausting push ups. Col. Wade, who was deposed as commander of the Camp Gordon replacement center for failing to "take prompt action"! following the various incidents, testified the Anderson "shaped up his company from one that was "less responsive" than oth ers to one that finished with honors. . : "Anderson was one of the best," Wade said. "His reputa tion was excellent." Careless Bird Sought As Fire Law Violator Belmont, N. H. U.R) Au thorities here are looking for a bird that disregarded fire laws and failed to obtain a building permit. The bird built a nest on top of a street lamp and the twigs kindled after the power was turned on. : Robert Leroux, an , off-duty fireman, was first to spot the smoke. He knew flames might . damage wires, but he didn't have a ladder handy. Leroux called his station and an alarm was sound ed. However, before apparatus arrived, a neighbor came out with a ladder and the blaze was extinguished. The bird fled.
