Valley's Attractions Listed for Delegates The following thumbnail descriptions of what to do and what fo see is published for the benefit of the 400 or more delegates to the Oregon Farm Bureau Federation convention in- Medford this week. Historic Jacksonville Scene of the earliest gold strikes in Oregon, Jacksonville Is just a few minutes' drive west of Medford. Points of particular -Interest include an unusually well equipped museum, operated by the Southern Oregon-Historical society, the oldest Protestant church west of the Rocky mountains still In use, and many pioneer buildings including the old Masonic hall, and the Beekman bank, which has been left just as it was In Pioneer days. Crater Lake Approximately 80 miles east of Medford, with much of the trip following the famous Rogue river, is Crater Lake National park. In addition to the world-renowned lake, the trip includes stops at Mill Creek falls, just this side of Prospect, the gorge of the Rogue River, and a natural bridge over the Rogue. Road conditions in the park should be checked locally at this time of year. House of Mystery The nationally-publicized House of Mystery, In the Oregon Vortex, is located northwest of Gold Hill on Sardine creek, on a road plainly marked on Hfghway 99. The "vortex" Is said to have strange powers which contradict the laws, of gravity. Prescott Park Located atcp Roxy Ann, a peak directly east f Medford, Prescott park offers a spectacular view of the entire prea. 1 ' Lithia Park A natural park, located in Ashland, Lithia park Was designed and landscaped by Andrew McLaren, the man responsible for Golden Gate park in San Francisco. Featuring e zoo with many types of birds and animals, Lithia park is reputed to be one of the9 outstanding small city parks in the West. In addition, there are many interestinq short drives in the area, and many of the local industries, including packing plants, lumber mills, and manufacturing concerns, welcome visitors. Youne and glamorous grandmothers, of course. They are members of an amateur theatrical club. They plan a three day trip to New York. They have written for theater tickets and admission cards to television broadcasting studios with no success. Have been informed there are no theater tickets for the hits for dates they want them. Nor no admission cards to TV studios to see their airwave favorites in person. They ask my advice and assistance. A P.S. savs: "We all Jove you Eddie." Very flatter ing. Still I wonder if they love me for myself alone or because they think I can get them, tick ets for "The Pajama Game." Anyway, I have written these charming subscribers a letter which I feel includes some sound advice as to the solution of their problem. Horses & Women Have finally met a mother and daughter who actually look like sisters. The mother is 37. The daughter is 19. Speaking of young looking mamas, I once heard of a 25 year old mother of four children who was re fused entrance to a night club in Chicago. The man at the door said she looked like a minor and he wouldn't believe otherwise unless she brought along a birth certificate. Then there was that divorce suit in New York. The husband said that when they were married his wife told him she was 28. He later found her birth certificate which showed she was not 28 when married, but 49.' Imagine a woman tell ing A man about to marry that she was 21 years younger than she really was and getting away with it! Life Expectancy A bus driver can hope to live . longer than a conductor. So say the life expectancy experts. Be ing a conductor is said to be harder on the nerves. That is due to the manner in which so many people nag conductors. This research considered only buses that have both driver and conductor. How about one man : buses where the operator is both driver and conductor? How about that poor 'guy's life ex pectancy? Would seem to me that driving a bus through the traffic of a major city and also having to collect fares, make change, issue transfers and an swer questions would take at least 15 years off a man's .life. It was originally called "Pi Alley" because of its prox imity to printing plants. "Pi," as you know, is a printing term meaning a "jumbled mass of type." The deaths on the gridiron have all been in high school or small college games. So I note it said. That's wrong. In a football game, be tween Yale and West Point some years ago a cadet player named Byrnes was killed. The game was played at West Point. . Passing By Nejla Ates. Energetic expo-, nent of Oriental dancing. In the musical show "Fanny," she does what some people refer to as a Deny aance," others as a "mus cle dance." I never saw Little Egypt perform. Nor - have T viewed the efforts of the daring aanseuse Known as "Fatima, the muscle dancer." However, old timers tell me the dance Nejla does makes those of Little Egypt and Fatima look very tame in comparison. National Farm Bureau Convention Slated December 12-16 in NewYork; Program Set Farm families from all 48 slates and Puerto Rico will meet in New York Dec. 12-16 for the 36th annual - meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federa tion. They will discuss public is sues, hear speakers of national prominence, elect members of the board of directors, and adopt policies for the year ahead. The resolutions adopted at the close of the meeting will reflect months of policy development study and discussion throughout the nation. Benson to Speak Speakers at the general ses sions will include Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson; Sir James Makins, British ambassa dor to the United States; Dr. Milton Eisenhower, president of Pennsylvania State university; Clarence Randall, president of the Inland Steel Corporation; Senator Spessard L. Holland, Florida, member of the. senate committee , on agriculture and forestry, and Dr. Nicholas Ny sradi, chairman of the depart ment -of economics, Bradley University and former minister of finance of Hungary. . Special Conferences Monday, Dec. 13, wijl be de voted to special conferences on organization, Farm Bureau women's activities,- young peo ple's activities, livestock, poul try, fruits and vegetables, dairy. field crops, insurance, land and water, and tax legislative prob lems. A farm safety conference will be held early Tuesday morning. The general . convention ses sions will begin Tuesday morn ing, Dec. 14, with the annual Civil Service Exams Set for Federal Jobs Civil service examinations for stenographers, typists, highway engineer trainees and design pat ent examiners have been, an nounced. The stenographic and typing jobs are in various federal agencies in and near Washing ton, D. C, and pay from $2,750 to $3,175 annually. ' Engineering jobs are with the bureau of public roads through out the U. S. and its territories and - possessions. , The salary range is $4,175 to $3,410. The examiners jobs are in the patent office in -Washington, and pay $3,410 to $4,205. Information and application forms are available from C. W. General sessions will be held in the Promenade Ballroom, Manhattan Center. Convention headquarters will be at the Ho tel New Yorker. So they bought a bus and converted it for trins. Robert F. James, a hardware store operator, bought the 33 passenger bus from a company uiat went out of business.
