"The United States Exploring Expedition During the. Years 1838 to 1842" to quote the of ficial title of the historic enter prise that was conducted by Commander Charles. Wilkes, USN marked the beginning of the end of the Hudson's Bay company south of the 49th par allel, except on Vancouver Island. The scientists and sailors of the naval squadron, made them selves at home in Puget Sound and the Columbia river. At all forts and posts the courtesies of the company were enjoyed by the members of the expedition. This simple and important fact stands forth from text and illustration in the reports. It is a record of surveys and studies so voluminous that a formidable part of it remains unpublished. The Four Babies Commander Charles Wilkes himself was a gifted writer of descriptive and narrative prose. His accounts of life at Fort Van couver and other places- of the region in 1841 have enduring value and charm. . One passage describes the first "American" home on Pu get Sound. It was very new when Wilkes visited ; it. The dwelling was the work of Meth odist .missionaries, Dr. .J. P. Richmond and William H. Will son. Its site was at Nisqually. ; Governor Simpson had invit ed the Catholic missionaries to work in this field.
