U.FJ A 44- year-old Army major Friday was charged with committing trea son while a prisoner of war in .North Korea. He denied the charges and said all he asked was a "fair trial." Maj. Ambrose H. Nugent,' Mer rill, Wis., father of two children. said "I do not feel I am guilty of any crime nor have trans gressed any Army regulations. I never received preferential treatment of any kind from the Communists. The Army charged him with "treasonable offenses", and list ed as violations: "Offering of in telligence 4o the enemy; imped ing escape of . fellow prisoners, and permitting use of his photo and signature on surrender leaf lets and collaboration with the enemy." Christmas Opening Slated Oeeember 1 By Merchants Here Wednesday, Dec. 1, has been set as the official opening of the Christmas season by downtown Medford merchants, according to Don McNeil, manager of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. ... This season's celebration is ex pected to be one of the most col orful in recent years, with plans Income Expenses Of Shakespearean -Festival Both Up Ashland Oregon Shakespear ean Festival income in 1954 was above previous years, according to William Patton, general man ager, but the largest expenditure for capital improvements in his tory led to a deficit. Total income was $37,178.60. Total operating expenditures were $30,445.08. Expenditures for capital items anfl improve ments, however, totaled $7, 704.63, bringing total expendi tures for the year to $38,149.71. The deficit of $971.11 came out of the festival's limited re i serve fund. Sealing Biggest The largest single expenditure of the season went toward pay ing for the new seats, Patton pointed out. One-third of the 600 purchased' have been paid for, with the balance due over the next two seasons. Without donations from patrons, the gen eral manager said, this initial installation of seats . could not have been made. He added that donations were still being re ceived and gratefully accepted. When the 600 now installed are paid for, the association plans to purchase over 400 more, so that comfortable seats will be available throughout the theater. Patton stated that any associa tion member wishing a complete break-down of festival finances might have a 1954 report upon request. ' to revive the parade, lighted street decorations and novel win dow displays. Jaycees To Sponsor , The Christmas - parade will again be spftnsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. It will feature floats portraying Biblical and fairyland themes. Numer ous cash prizes will be offered for' the winners of each partici pating division. Entries will not be confined to Medford proper, and the Jay cees are inviting any . entries from surrounding communities. In 1952, a total of 57 floats were entered. j .' -;. Merchants Pay Costs ' The Retail Merchants associa tion will finance the parade and street lighting through payment of 50 cents a front foot by each business. McNeil pointed out that the association bought the new decorations last year, but was unable to light most of them at the' time. - To aid shippers, local mer- cnants plan to remam open a. total of seven nights before Christmas. Included will be each Wednesday, and Dec. 20, 21, 22 and 23. General plans are under Chair man Howard Boyd's supervision. 4-HCIub Gold Hill Club Dinner Bell 4-H cooking club of Gold Hill met at the home of Mrs. R. W. Hixsons. We de cided that we would take turns in bringing cookies for refresh ments. We also decided that at the next meeting , we would make meat balls. We made fried tomatoes. Wafer District Job Nearing Half-Way Mark; Payment Due Work of laying the 10-inch main for the Charlotte Ann Wa ter district system will soon reach the half-way point, it was reported Saturday. Soule Construction company, the- contractor, has completed ditching operations to the Lev erette property on the South Pa cific highway and has started work on the district's booster pump house, also located on the Leverette property. When fin ished, the pipe line will extend to within 800 feet of .the north city limits of the town of Phoe nix. Deadline Set At its last meeting, the dis trict's . board of commissioners set Dec. 10 as the deadline for full payment of connection fees at the current lowest rate. After that date connection fees will rise progressively and reach a maximum of $200 'on Dec. 31, 1955 for the smallest, connec tion available, which is the 3A inch size. Present fee for this size is $75. Word has reached the commis sion that the pending availability of city water service has en couraged the planning of one or two new housing and commer cial developments within the dis trict. - Evans Valley 4-H Awards Presented Achievement pins and awards were presented to mem bers of Evans Valley 4-H club Wednesday evening at Wimer Grange hall. Presentation was by William H. Pratt, assistant manager of the Medford branch of First National Bank of Port land. ' A potluck dinner was follow ed by a program, including a discussion of a 4-H sheep proj ect by Bob Gail, Rogue River, and by square dancing. First year pins were present ed to Eleanor Alfonso, Karen Byers, Jean DeRobaum, Sharon Martin, Billy Deckard, Timothy Murdock, John Penn, and Bar bara Woods. Second year awards went to Rose Marie Machado, Terrie Roach, Lorraine Tracer, Jo Ann Wood, Marilyn Deckard, George Holmbeck, and John Machado. Those receiving third year pins were .
