About 30 boys attended a con ference at which John Parker, Crater Lake Motors, discussed opportunities in the auto me chanic trade. Parker outlined training necessary to enter the vocation and the prospects of those employed in it. : Some 35 girls attended a con ference at which Mrs. Susan Monteith, Medford registered nurse, discussed her occupation. Mrs. Monteith described prepa ration required to be a nurse, nurse training, and the type of person likely to succeed in the profession. - ; - . - Purpose of the conferences is to provide high; school students ; with accurate knowledge of vari-1 ous vocations which can best be supplied by those working in the vocation, school officials state. ; ' Diabetes Defection Program Announced The Medford area phase of a national diabetes detection drive will start Nov. 14 with the open ing of . "Diabetes Week," it was announced Saturday by Dr. Mar tin L. Vorheis, local member of a state committee on diabetes. "Find the million unknown diabetics in the United States" is the theme of the yearly drive. During the campaign, public at tention 1 will be directed to the importance of early diagnosis' and early, adequate treatment of the ailment.' The Oregon State Medical so ciety, through its committee on diabetes, is again cooperating with the American Diabetes as sociation in the annual project. At Dr. Brady the time the dental society gave me the pat on the back the dentists had not become fully aware that I had quit brushing my teeth. The Ne braska dental society has not yet formally repudiated my teach ings, but in the past decade I Cafeteria Service Due at Domiciliary . Camp White Arrangements are being made to install cafe teria service for members in the Domiciliary dining hall. The en gineering division has completed placing the needed fixtures. Cafeteria service is standard in most government hospitals, as in the armed forces. The kitchen and dining hall at Camp White were originally designed for this type of service. When the VA .moved into the station, the dining hall was ar ranged to feed the men at table, owing to the large number of handicapped veterans many of whom will be screened for con tinuing table service. The pres ent corps of waitresses and kitch en help will be adequate to op erate the new cafeteria service, the chief dietitian, Mrs. Frank lin Girard, stated. The schedule now calls for two meal periods three times a day for the 800 men in the. domicili ary. A new schedule "is being worked, and is expected to pro vide better economy and effi ciency. . Don Pulley, chief cook in the dietetic service, has. returned from a two weeks' training pe riod at Vancouver hospital where the cafeteria system is employed. Typing Class Slated At Phoenix School ' . Phoenix Phoenix High school is offering a beginning .typing class for adults on Tuesday eve nings. Registration will remain open j until Tuesday, Nov. 16. Classes . meet every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will run for 10 weeks. Registration fee will be $5 which will cover all expenses except a small charge for typing paper if it is pur chased from the school. There are still a few openings for this class. Interested adults may call the high school office for further information. Washington U.R) The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said that for nearly two years fac tory employees' salaries have been rising seven times faster than the cost of living. In several throw-away pub lications, which seem popular with the dentists, I have beeen treated as the sponsors who sell glorified soap and trick brushes to the moron public, think I de serve. 1 Sept. 2, '54, a Michigan dentist wrote: "As for dental health, bal anced diet, good thorough pro phylaxis, plus rigid scaling of roots when indicated, and also periodic X-ray check-up of the teeth then there wouldn't be such a loss of human teeth. I think you expound this type of treatment." (signed) . L..., D.D.S. ' I had become so accustomed to unfriendly communications from dentists that this, friendly note flabbergasted me. In regard to scaling of roots and periodic X-ray films of the teeth (I do wish the dentist had not used the glib term "check up," which like "shot," "defi nite," and "rather" is affected by people who don't know what they're talking about), I'd defer, believe it or not, to the judgment of my. dentist. These are techni-' cal questions which the dentist is better qualified to answer, it -seems to me, just as the physi cian better qualified than even the smartest patient to judge whether an anesthetic "is to be used and if so, which. What the - dentist means by "balanced diet" I don't know. What anybody means by "bal anced diet" I don't know. Does anybody? Our everyday diet in i Americans not adequate for this it fails to supply enough cal-! ciuiri, phosphorus, and vitamin D. ' '-. : Even though I try to pick a quarrel with the dentist before he has finished what he. had to say, I assure him that his letter has done much good. For one thing it reminds me that in my book, column, pamphlets, and belief, good dentistry is essential for health, comfort, vite, good looks, and longevity; and be tween rounds, so to speak, I love and admire all dentists for their contribution to the greatness of America.
