Three Medford Men To Attend Annual Safety Conference Salem Three Medford resi dents will participate directly in the governor's sixth annual In dustrial Safety conference to be , held in Portland Nov. 18 and 19, according to the State Industrial Accident Commission, sponsor ing the conference witty the co operation of labor and manage ment. , Don gutter, safety engineer for the California-Oregon Power Co., will appear on two panels in the public utilities section. M. O. ' Bessonette, Bessonette Construction Co., and C. E. Turn idge, Carpenters Local 2067, AF of L, will take part in the building construction section. Industry Stctions Ten industry sections have been arranged; automotive, food processing, heavy construction, logging, log transportation, met al industries, plywood, sawmill big, petroleum-chemical, and state, county and municipal. The conference will open at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, with a general assembly at which Gov. Paul L. Patterson will give the keynote address. The speaker at the banquet Thursday at 6:30 p.ra. will be A. H. The Civil Aeronautics admin istration has a tough assignment from two boys who want to go on a diamond hunting mission in Venezuela starting in June of 1955. Peter Thompson and Jim Hopkins want to start from Stanford - Village, Calif. They want to know all about air transportation to Ciudad Boli var and Icabaru and how much it would cost. Also they would like to know what the luggage limit is for the trip and how to get reservations. The National Audubon society has a staff member with an un usual job. He earns his stipend answering questions about na ture. One of the recent ones ran like this: "Why doesn't a bird fall off its perch when it is sleeping?" The answer: A bird slumps down while snoozing and pulls a leg tendon that clamps its toes around the perch. Simple as all that . Vets Variety Show Scheduled Tonight The Veterans Sour Variety Show and Radio Quiz, sponsored by Myers-Holland Post 129, American Legion, Central Point, and radio station KYJC will be presented at the theater at Camp White . this evening at 7:45 o'clock. The program will hon or the city of Medford and Med ford Post 15, American Legion. The Medford post will have charge of the entertainment, and according to Commander -Herb Crain and District 13 Ladies Auxiliary president Mrs. Max ine Bigelow, the entertainment will surpass any previous pro gram at the domiciliary center. . In the radio quiz Franklin "Jer ry" Gerrard, of the special serv ices omce win ask the ques tions, Prizes will be awarded by the merchants; of Medford. Refreshments will be served by the ladies of the Medford unit, assisted by the auxiliary of Post 129. The public is invited to attend. The quiz will be broadcast over KYJC later. Bridgeport, Conn. (U.R) John J. Panso, 75, who had $6,000 in the bank, was found starved to death in his basement flat. Agreement Reached Over Death Claims Portland (U.R) Agreement over death claims was reached by the Oregon and Washington industrial accident commissions yesterday, thus averting a walk out of,' crews repairing Bonne ville dam. The workers had threatened a strike, not against their em ployer, but as a protest against delays in settling death claims for the survivors of five men killed in an accident on the proj ect last August. The commissions agreed to ac cept Pier 9 of the dam as the dividing line and each commis sion agreed to pay death claims of two families of the accident victims. Claim for the fifth vic tim's family has not been filed. Medford Students Earn SOC Offices Ashland Three Medford students have captured all of fices in the sophomore class at Southern Oregon college. Elected president was - Leon McDougall, teacher education major. . Vince Swinney is vice president and Lynn Gray is the new secretary. McDougall was graduated from Medford High school in 1953. Last year, his first at SOC, he was a yell leader, vice-president of Alpha Phi Omega and, a member of Sigma Alpha Sigma. He is also a member of the Fu ture Teachers of America. In high school he was active in speech and dramatics. Bert Jenks, Eagle Point, teach er education major, has been elected president of the senior class. Also elected to class offices were Joan Pochelu; Ashland, vice-president, and Janice Wad ley, Ashland, secretary-treasurer.
