Brooks Scanlon Signs No Wage Boost Pad V Bend (U.R) Brooks Scanlon, Inc., announced yesterday it has signed a no wage' increase agree ment with, the International Woodworkers of America (CIO). The contract expires April 1, 1956. Negotiations were started early this year, but were inter rupted by the three-month lum ber strike this summer. Jack . Chambers, local busi ness agent for the union, said the major contract change was the substitution of a mainten ance shop for the union shop. Under this provision, an em ploye is not required to join the union. " Medford Legionnaires who are also businessmen were, pick ed as team captains, and retain ed custody of Stuffy until they got 25 members. Then he was passed along to the next team captain. s Thus, Stuffy brought in a good many members for the American Legion, but it was purely a friendly gesture on his part. He isnt even a member himself. Counterfeiters Too Good Stuttgart, Germany U.R) Seven men were brought to trial here on counterfeiting charges Tuesday. Authorities said they were .caught because the coun terfeit five mark ($1.19) pieces they were making were'of bet ter quality than the legitimate ones. - ; : Ashland's Police Chief Resigns Ashland Chief of Police Vera Smith submitted a letter of resig nation to the city council's police committee chairman yesterday. Council action on the letter will be taken at the next meeting, v The resignation is the result of a long-standing dispute about the fact .that" Smith recently built a new home just outside the city limits. The .city charter requires that appointive officers of the' city reside within the city. A charter amendment to change this ; provision was defeated by the voters at last week's election. " - . . - - 1'.'"- Program Before Week Opens Jackson county's role in aid ing retarded ' children was ex plained today by Mrs. Robert Minear in advance of national retarded children's week, Nov. 14 to 23. Mrs.' Minear is general chairman of study groups for parents of the mentally retarded. Four r such ,' groups,.; with 30 families participating, meet in the county each month to study child growth 'and development of the mentally' retarded. They were formed last year through the Jackson . County Public Health association. : , Professional Aid The groups have the profes sional consultation of Francis Kline, director of special educa tion in . Ashland; Karl Hayes, teacher of the pilot school in Phoenix; Miss Dorothy Collar d, supervisor of nursing, Jackson county Public Health depart ment; and Miss Mary Vanden berg, psychiatric - social work er. -. .' V There are an estimated 5,000 mentally retarded children in Oregon public schools, not in cluding those at Fairview home, Mrs. Minear reported. Many more are cared for in homes. About 2 per cent of the popula tion is estimated to be "institu tion cases," she said.
