Underground Bogota (U.R) An under- ground cathedral as large as that of Notre Dame in Paris and larger than any church in Co-, lombia, is nearing completion in the deep salt mines at Zipaquira, 38 miles north of this capital. The mines, in a branch of the eastern range of the Colombian Andes, are the property of the nation and are managed by the official Bank of the Republic. They have been worked from pre-conquest times when the Chibchas lived on the Bogota Savanna, ignorant of the exist ence of other continents and of cults other than those of the moon and the sun. Driftways Forgotten '. Many systems of working the mines have been used during the long period of exploitation. Blasting with dynamite was the favorite one for many years. This last system left in its wake huge driftways with rugged walls, which were forgotten when mod ern methods did away with dyna mite and its consequences. When the Colombian architect, Jose Maria Gonzalez Concha, who was educated in Italy, visit ed the forgotten driftways, he thought that these could be turn ed into a "salt cathedral," which would keep the rough walls, the silence and the sombre stateli ness of the mines. His thought became a project and was accept ed by the Bank of the Republic. Gonzalez Concha was dedicated to this work when he died a year ago. Since then, another architect, Alfonso Rodriguez Orgaz, has di rected the work, which will be finished in a year of so. ' Last year, 217,047 people visit ed the unfinished cathedral. Some altars, lighting, floor paving and the platform for the choir are still to be done, i This underground cathedral has a nave and two side aisles. Thirteen square salt pillars di vide the aisles from the nave. The nave and the two side aisles make up the body of the cathe dral. Another aisle goes around the apse, one the left and leads , to the high altar. The "nave of The Calvary," as it is called, ends with the high altar. This is crowned by a great cross, carved from a salt block weighing 10 tons. The right aisle, that of "Our Lady of the Rosary," ends in an altar, which also bears that name. The left aisle, called "the Baptistry," will be used for baptisms. Indirect. Lighting The aisle around the left side of the apse is called "Aisle of the History and the Nativity." Four great sculptured groups will be placed in it, representing the Gospel'subjects of "The Na tivity," "The Annunciation," "The Descent from the Cross" and "The Prayer in the Garden of Olive." . All of these altars will be carved into the salt walls, since the salt rock, on being worked, takes the ap perance of finely polished stone. Indirect lighting will be used to bring out the characteristics of this building. It will consume about 120 kilowatt hours, since 150 spotlights of 1,000 watts each, will be installed. Platform on Rock . The choir platform ' will be built on a salt rock stand, held up by the two pillars on the right, nearest to the high altar. The floor will be covered with colonial-style clay tile. An orna mental wooden fence will stand at the entrance of the cathedral. The walls will remain bare and unpolished. They will show the marks of the dynamite blasts; their rough, markings were left to symbolize the life of the miners, who have thrown all the ardor of their Catholic faith into this underground cathedral as a monument to their devotion.
