J J Suggestions for Autoists Planning Trip To Alaska Ottowa U.R) If you're planning to drive to Alaska over the war-built Alaskan high way the government of Canada has some words of advice for you. The first 1,221 miles of the fa mous 1,527-mile route to Fair- banks lie within Canada. The section is administered and main tained by a special section of the Canadian army. But Canadian civil agencies also have a lot to say about how it is used. And there are certain facts the department of northern affairs and national resources thinks tourists should know before they start out on the trip. A booklet published by the department wraps up the main points: 11 Carry enough money to cover the cost of the trip all the way. Canadian authorities will require that you convince them you won't be stranded without money some place along the line. It's rugged country. The author ities can require a bond under certain conditions. Extra Tires 2. Include enough cash for emergency repairs on the car. In this connection the government seems pretty certain there will be some. Under general sugges tions they urge motorists to cov er the underside of their gasoline tanks with pieces of old tires to protect them from flying gravel. And bring along "a basic set of car tools." " 3. A shovel, a pick, tire chains, a tow rope and, in the summer months June through Septem ber two extra tires are musts. The booklet suggests that the tires be six-ply. In fall, winter and spring, a box or pail of sand is advisable to cope with ice. In the summer "a good insect re pellent" is necessary. 4. If you take guns and fishing equipment, "be prepared to have them sealed up by Canadian au thorities except in the areas where you have obtained hunt ing or fishing licenses. All hunt ing is forbidden in game sanctu aries, and camp-fire permits are needed in British Columbia. And don't be surprised at fluc tuating gasoline prices. You'll pay 68 cents a gallon at Coal River, B. C, and again at Koidern Camp in the Yukon Ter ritory. At points in between the prices go as low as 47 cents. Worth While The American tourists who seems to get better mileage or fears his gas tank has shrunk is reminded that Canada uses the imperial gallon one fifth larger than the American gallon. But in spite of the warnings, tourist authorities hasten to as sure motorists the trip is worth the trouble. The route passes through some of the wildest and most awe-inspiring country on the continent. Fishing is gen erally excellent and hunting is good. Permits for fishing cost non-residents of the Yokon Ter ritory S2. Hunting licenses range up to $150 for non-citizens and $100 for Canadian citizens for big game. A game bird license costs $10. Meals at stops along the road cost up to $3. Sleeping accom modations generally cost about the same as in more civilized sections of the country and are plentiful in Dawson Creek, B. C, Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Wat son Lake, Y. T., and Whitehorse, Y. T. As an afterthought, the book let suggests that anyone thinking about prospecting along the way check with the department of national resources in Ottowa, and with the provincial depart ment of mines in Victoria, B. C, on regulations. LEGAL NOTICES Man Becoming More Amphibious Madison, Wis. iCU.R) Naval research reports recently pre sented here indicate that man is becoming increasingly amphib ious. At least that's the implica tion in a report presented at a meeting of the American physio logical Society. Greater lung capacity and new breathing patterns were cited as man's new acquisitions. The changes occur when skin divers and spear fishermen swim regu larly under water without a breathing apparatus. According to the report of the U. S. Naval Medical Research Laboratory, the swimmers adapt to the needs of their new en vironment. The lung capacity in creases and the breathing rate is cut. Scientists found that swim ming instructors ' take in twice as. much air as they did before the underwater duty and their breathing rate drops to between seven and 10 breaths a minute. They formerly took between 13 and 18 breaths in the same period.
