Irrigation District Election Slated The election of a new director of the Medford Irrigation district will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Oak Grove school, it was announced today by Jack Hoffbuhr, man ager. The position is for a term of three years, beginning in Janu ary, and represents all of the dis trict lands lying west of Kings highway and the city of Med ford, known as Precinct 3. Roy G. Smith, the incumbent, and Albert E. Hueners are the two candidates for the post. ' Those eligible to vote include all persons who own two or more acres of land in the district, or who have contracted to buy two or more acres. The record of deed xr contract to purchase must be at least six months old. Hoffbuhr said that those vot ing should bring to the poll evi dence of such ownership, be cause of the fact that at present it is impossible to compile a list of eligible voters for use at the polls. Nufrition Planning Program is Scheduled A program demonstrating good nutrition in planning fam ily meals will appear on tele vision at 5 p.m. Sunday, spon sored by the Jackson County Public Health association. Miss Charlotte Klock, assis tant chief dietician at the vet erans administration domiciliary, is in charge of the show. Mrs. John Cotton, Ashland, and Mrs. William Knips also will take part. Miss Klock will explain the basic food needs, using products most easily available locally. MedfordTribune Friday. November 5. 1954 More Medford Maps Available at Chamber Another 1,500 copies of the Chamber of Commerce's map of Medford-have been printed and are how available at a nominal price, according to Don McNeil, chamber manager. There has been a consistent and heavy demand for the maps, he said, and for several weeks the chamber office was out of them, until the new supply was printed. On the new edition, the cham ber membership directory has been expanded to include 127 new members, for a total of 616 firms which belong to the chamber. New McCarthy Recall Petition Planned Sauk City, Wis. U.R) Editor Leroy Gore said today a second recall petition for Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis.) will be started after Jan. 1. A petition circulated earlier this year failed to get sufficient signatures, but a light vote Tues day reduces the number of sig natures needed. The new petition will need be tween 250,000 and 300,000 sig natures, Gore said, compared with the 404,000 requited for the first petition. The San Francisco fire alarm system was created October 5, 1863, by the Board of Supervisors. Shakespearean Plays Proving Popular at Antioch College, Ohio Yellow Spring, O (U.R) The plays of William Shake speare, who never heard of Ohio, are proving as popular here as they did in Elizabethan England. The Antioch Area Theatre, on the campus of Antioch College, is engaged in presenting all the known works of Shakespeare over a five-year span with a part ly professional repertory com pany of 40. Faced with the problem of no theater building and little money, Antioch College faculty mem bers and AAT leaders decided to abandon, temporarily, con temporary plays and to offer classical plays outdoors and with a minimum of props. Three More Seasons They decided on Shakespeare's chronicle plays since Arthur Lithgow, now festival director, had long wanted to do them in a series. Response to those ' first eight "plays amazed the AAT staff, as mqre than 15,000 came from throughout Ohio to see Shakespeare-under-the-stars in this college town of 1,640 persons. ijucuurdgcu uy me uuiiai suc cess with Shakespeare, Lithgow staged Shakespeare's seven Greek and Roman plays in 10 weeks last year for more than 22,000 persons. This year, Antioch College agreed to underwrite three more seasons of the Bard's plays, in cluding this year's .festival of his romantic comedies and tragedies. The plays are given outdoors on Antioch's campus on a seven level stage built against the me dieval background of 100-year-old Antioch Hall. The audience sits on three sides of the front apron stage in semi-arena ar rangement, protected by a sun and rain screen if necessary. To Cincinnati The sturdy, seven-level stage. designed for easy dismantling. Will "be taken ' to Cincinnati's Music Hall this winter and re-assembled for the American pre miere of Jean Sibelius' score for "The Tempest," which AAT and the Cincinnati Symphony will present jointly Dec. 3 and 4. Antioch Area Theater's com pany is composed of about 40 persons. These include a corps of Broadway professionals, Antioch students, advanced drama stu dents from other colleges and community volunteers. They op erate with a non-star repertory system under standads sets by Actors' Equity Association Professional actors and act resses returning to AAT this summer include David Hooks, Jack Bittner, Keith Harrington, TV actress Nancy Marchand and Earle Hyman. Clarence Derwent, president of the American National Theatre and Academy, will join the troupe to play Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice."
