Every time I look over a dic
tionary I have never read before
I check on its definition of love.
The one before me now defines
love as "affection for another
person, especially one of the op
posite sex." I can't hand that
definition much. What diction
ary in your opinion has the best
definition of love. '
Girl Fridays
Every time I say it is claimed
stenography and typewriting
can be learned in six weeks, I
receive indignant letters from a
number of girl Fridays who say
said claim is "ridiculous." Any
way, I note announced by a
business school in Manhattan,
"Shorthand and typing in thirty
days." If it can't be done the
school should take the sign
down.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. What
was the name of the burlesque
show that ran for over a year on
Broadway? A. That was "Wine,
Women and Song." Was at the
Circle theater on Columbus oir-
cle. Stars were Alexander Carr,
Bonita, Lew Hearn and Orville
Harrold. Not long after that Or
ville Harrold was engaged to ap
pear at the Metropolitan Opera.
Q. What town in the United
States would you say has the
strangest name? A. How about
Delirium Tremens, Calif.
. Wll-Drtsitd Man
In the United States . 98 per
cent of the suits ' purchased by
men are ready made. Ninety-one
men have the assistance and ad-
vice of their wives when buying
a suit. Few bachelors" enjoy the
--benefit of expert feminine ad
vice as to what the well dressed j
man should wear. Most bachelors
hesitate to ask a girl to come
along when they buy a suit. That
make the girl -feel certain the
!nan wants to marry her. It is
almost a proposal.
Passing By
Abe Attell. Dean of ex-featherweights.
The old boxing cham
pion is still going strong at the
age of 74. Has a popular cafe
and restaurant on Second ave.,
Manhattan. . . . Dolores Gray.
Shapely, scintillating, sultry, so
phisticated stage siren. When
traveling she carries more bag
gage than any actress since Lily
Langtry. On a recent trip to Hol
lywood when traveling what she
considers "light," Dolores had
with her seven French poodles
and 36 pieces of baggage. In this
baggage were included 170 pairs
of shoes and 25 evening gowns.
Get It Right
Have had some difficulty in
getting the authentic version of
that "something borrowed"
rhyme for brides. The last line
should be "And a silver six
pence in her shoe." Have heard
from two brides. who went to
considerable trouble to get the
silver sixpence. One has been
happily married for 15 years and
is the mother of six fine chil
dren. The other is in her first
year arid everything is wonder
ful so far. Therhyme aforemen
tioned should read:
"Something old, something
new,
..Something borrowed, some
thing blue
And a silver sixpence in
your shoe.'
Facts 1
bo you consider yourself a
well informed person. Then tell
us quick as a fifth of a flash
who is Phumiphon. ; . . Note, 8
year old straight Kentucky bour
bon offered for $4 a .fifth. Seems
quite a bargain. Incidentally, it
was claimed by; liquor experts of
the yesteryear that bourbon
whiskey should be at least 8
years old to be fit for human
consumption. .

Emergency March
Of Dimes Campaign
Grosses $7,808.21
The Jackson county Emer
gency March of Dimes cam
paign, conducted during the last
two weeks of August, grossed
$7,808.21, according to J. D.
Montieth, campaign treasurer.
Expanses amounted to $509.93,
leaving a net balance of $7,
298.28, Montieth said. Of the net
amount, $2,432.76 was retained
by the focal chapter, a similar
amount was sent to the polio
prevention program of the Na
tional Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis, and a corresponding
amount was sent to the national
headquarters of the National
Foundation.
The emergency campaign in
the county was sponsored by the
Medford Active club with Al
Bradford as chairman.
Breakdown of Donations
Following is a breakdown of
contributions, through mail con
tributions, coin collectors and
special events, as compiled by
Montieth:
Medford $5,280.31, Jackson
ville $93.13, Central Point
$193.93, Ashland $680.26, Shady
Cove-Trail, $78.83. Camo White
$25.90, Talent $40, Phoenix
$53.13, Gold Hill $40, Eagle
Point $54, Rogue River $96.50,
Butte Falls $5, Prospect $1,144.22
and Applegate $22.98.
Montieth emphasized that
credit was given according to
postmarks on envelopes and
does not necessarily represent a
true picture of contributions ac
cording to towns. He pointed out
that many contributions were
undoubtedly mailed in a town
other than the sender's place of
residence, which would give
credit for the contribution to the
town where the donation was
mailed.
