(U.R) The Army has closed one chapter in one of the most baffling mys teries and still unsolved disap pearance of Maj. Robert Roy Clark. After more than 10 years, Clark has been declared offi cially dead. But Army officials indicated they will never close the files in the Clark case until the truth is known. Investigators have found dur ing a decade only a few, futile clues to what happened to the 33-year-old intelligence officer of the eastern defense command: Clark walked out of a drug store here, entered his cream colored coupe and drove off to ward Fort Bragg, N. C, 55 miles away, on March 17, 1944. Then he vanished utterly. Car Discovered Almost eight months to the day after he disappeared, a hunt er stumbled across something skillfully camulflaged in thick woods near Raeford, N. C. Rip ping off branches and limbs that made it invisible at 15 feet, the hunter found Clark's car cover ed with blankets. The person who had hidden the car obviously had expert training in the art of camouflage. Inside the car were Clark's uniforms, books, papers and an Army rifle. Hidden nearby in the underbrush were two over night bags.' Many Reports There were no indications of foul play; nothing to indicate what happened to Clark. The Army denied rumors that he was sent on a highly secret mission or had security informa tion. In the 10 years that followed, Army CID and FBI agents track ed down reports that he joined the merchant marine, took an assumed name to volunteer for overseas service, or that he join ed the Canadian forces. No basis for these reports was ever turned up. Clark was a bachelor with no serious love interests. He left only a few distant relatives. He was sober, industrious, friendly and highly intelligent. Affairs in Order While stationed here, Clark lived in the home of John A. Park, publisher of the Raleigh Times. A check revealed his per sonal affairs in order and that he intended to return to Raleigh from Fort Bragg. Clark was born Nov. 15, 1910, 2nd had lived most of his life in Hackensack, N. J. Metallic Yarn Business Spurts New York (U.R) Metallic yarns are flashing rays of op timism nowadays in the nation's recession-ridden textile in dustry. The yarn with a glitter turns up in women's blouses, table linens, draperies, men's ties and even golf bags. "The metallic yarn business has spurted from a standing start in 1947, when output was only 11,000 pounds, to a new record of about 1,000,000 pounds this year," said Arthur C. Brucks, a pioneer in the field. He is president of Metlon Corp., a leading producer. Brucks thinks that the metal lic yarn business is just starting to roll, with new uses popping up constantly. Metlon, for in stance, will turn out yarn for the upholstery fabrics of 1955 model autos. Aids Industry Available in 16 colors (rang ing from "cornflower blue" to "Arctic green"), the Metlon product is made by "sandwich ing" transparent plastic film to both sides of super-thin alumi num foil. The most popular width is l64th of an inch. The pliable thread does ont tarnish and it may be combined with both natural and synthetic yarns. Metlon is used in church vest ments, as well as in rugs and suspenders. As defense item, it goes into tow targets for anti-air-craft guns. "Before World War II," Brucks notes, "metallic yarn used in this country was chiefly an import from France of plated copper wire. "During the war there were restrictions on using aluminum, so it is only in the past eight years that the metallic yarn field has enjoyed a chance to grow." He points out that use of me talic yarn enhances the beauty of other textiles, thereby tending to aid the entire industry. Stu dies show that Americans now use only 32 pounds of cotton, wool and man-made fibers an nually on a per capita basis. This compares with 36 pounds last year and a record of almost 42 pounds in 1941. During World War II, the United States spent more than $12,000,000,000 to produce am munition items in more than 160 large plants. This ammunition weighed 20,000,000 tons and re presented about 80,000,000,000 individual rounds. (U.R) Amateur inventors in the bat talion maintenance shops of the First Armored Division are mak ing their work easier and safer by designing gimmicks, gadgets and contraptions. One of the busiest is Cpl. Jerry Kosik, of East Bernard, Tex., who designed a mount to carry a mortar in an M-75 arm ored personnel carrier. It was so successful that it was approved by the division and was adopted by all armored Archeologists Find Cache of War Relics Albany, N. Y. --(U.R) Arche ologists working on the Fort William Henrv restoration tiroi- ect at Lake George Village have unearthed a cache of French and Indian War relics. The archeoloeists were dig ging in the cellar of the 200- year-oid fort when they discov ered a Tower musket bayonet, a large padlock. sDikes which had held the fortress logs to gether, a Rogers Rangers hatchet head, a hewing axe and a trench shovel. Many of the relics were in "extraordinarily fine condition," according to project officials. Be fore restoration of the fort is completed it is estimated nearly 15 miles of logs will have been used.
