NOVEMBER 3, 1954 Pages 1-6 Driver License Suspensions Top Figure for 1953 Salem (U.R) More driver licenses have been suspended for unsafe driving records in the last three months than for all of 1953, according to Secre tary of State Earl T. Newbry. In August, 17 driving record suspensions were handed down. In September the number drop ped to 10. But October saw an all-time high when 26 lost lic enses because of too-frequent accidents or violation convic tions. Three other drivers were sus pended last month under the state's new program to suspend driver licenses of persons clear ly at fault in fatal mishaps. During all of last year only 53 driver record suspensions were given. Newbry said that during Oc tober, 794 drivers were notified their records had been placed in the "repeater" file. Any fur ther entries of accidents or vio lations will result in being call ed for interview before driver improvement personnel, these drivers were told. 122 Interviews Conducted Driver improvement staff members conducted 122 inter views with repeaters during October. Non -mandatory suspensions for October totaled 263, of which 107 were based on discretion ary action of state officials and 166 were given on court recom mendations. In addition, 297 drivers received mandatory sus pensions after court convictions of driving while intoxicated. (International Soundphoto) 'Death Trap' Campaign Slated at Shady Cove Shady Cove A campaign to render safe "death traps" for children such as abandoned ice boxes, old wells, and so on is being started by the auxiliary to Steelhead post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, it was announced last week. . Cooperating in the project are the Shady Cove Lady Lions and the Parent-Teacher associa tions of Shady Cove and Elk Trail. The groups plan a house-to-house canvass in the effort to eliminate death traps. "Safety for our children by Thanksgiving," is the slogan adopted by the campaign work ers, and the drive wil continue during November. Residents in the upper Rogue area are re ported to be taking considerable interest in the project, and hope was expressed that those in oth er parts of the county also join the program. October Report Of Police Listed Schools Conference Slated for Ashland Ashland Educators from throughout southern Oregon and-! northern California will partici pate in the northwest regional conference of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum De velopment to be held at Lincoln ; school, Ashland, Nov. 5 and 6. Conference chairman Dr. John D. McAulay, professor of educa tion at Southern Oregon college, said group leaders will be Ver non Larson, assistant principal, Cave Junction; Dr. Marvin Smith, assistant superintendent, Roseburg; Elliott Beckon, assist-1 ant superintendent, Medford; and Dr. Alvin Fellers, assistant professor of English, Southern Oregon college. Acting as re corders for the group meetings will be Joe Fader, principal, Ashland Junior High school, Mrs. Evelyn Mason, supervisor, Siskiyou County, Yreka, Calif.; H. P. Jewett, superintendent, Central Point; and Una B. Inch, supervisor, Jackson county. Con sultants for the various groups will be Anne Sprague, superinr tendent of schools, Lake county; Gary Robertson, supervisor, Klamath Falls schools; Mrs. Lil lian Farley, superintendent, Coos county; and Mrs. Dora Brosis, Lakeview. Dr. Fannie Shaftell, associate professor of education at Stan ford University, will be the over all conference leader. Dr. Mc Aulay said. She is a specialist in the social studies program and will direct considerations given to the topic of the conference: "The Revised Social Studies Program." Medford's city police depart ment handled a total of 47 ma jor cases during October, which was a decrease of four from 1953, according to Police Chief Charles Champlin's monthly re port. Included in last month's total were one robbery, one rape, four burglaries, four larceny- theft over $50, 36 under $50, and one auto theft. Twenty three of the cases were closed, or 49 per cent Major listings under miscel laneous offenses were two oth er assaults, 10 embezzlement or fraud, 1 sex offense, 37 drunks, 4 disorderly conduct, 9 vag rancy, 5 driving while intoxi cated, 58 violation of road and driving laws, and 187 violations of traffic and motor vehicle laws. There were 39 motor vehicle traffic accidents with eight in juries. Of traffic citations, speed ing (basic rule) lead the list in volume with 55 violations.
