Nixons Plan Brief Vacation in Florida 4 "Washington U.R) Vice-President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixon plan to leave by air this after noon for a brief vacation in Florida, his office said today. The vice-president expects to ba incomunicado after the elec tion in a rented cottage at Key Biscayne. . Spokesmen in his office said they are not sure when Nixon will return. Presumably, how-, ever, he will want to be here for the Senate session starting Monday. Grey Green Beige Nutria 'Better Schools' Conference Slated Here Saturday , A regional "better schools conference" will be held at Lincoln school here Saturday, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., according to Viola Pomeroy, Eagle Point, chairman of the committee in charge. The conference is under the sponsorship of the department of classroom teachers of the Oregon Education association, and will be attended by delegates from Jackson, Josephine, Lake, Klam ath and Douglas counties. The purpose is to foster a better un derstanding of public education as it affects teachers, adminis trators, school board members and others. A program has been planned around the conference theme, "Are We Interpreting Public Education?" Dr. Harry E. Dil lin, president of Linfield col lege, will speak, and there will be discussion groups concerned with the ways of improving parent-teacher relationships and understanding. A panel will pre sent the ideas of the discussion groups, summarizing the ideas and opinions given. Members of the public inter ested in better schools are in vited to attend. (U.PJ A young Cathlamet, Wash., cou ple was charged with man slaughter , yesterday in connec tion with the death of their three-month-old son here last Wednesday. Prosecuting Attorney Mitchell Doumit filed an information in the Wahkiakum County Super ior Court ' charging that John Peter, and Charlotte Hart, both 18, kept the' baby in a "condition of filth and contamination and failed to provide proper care Dr. Charles P. Larson, Tacoma specialist in criminal pathology, performed an autopsy with two Cathlamet physicians as observ ers. He said death was due to multiple-infected skin ulcers brought on by neglect, and bron chial pneumonia. Doumit, who was called to the Hart home in downtown Cath lamet Wednesday morning by Dr. T. O. Manning, called in the pathologist. Dr. Larsen estimat ed the child had been dead about nine hours when .Dr. Manning was summoned. The Hart couple told police officers they returned home early Wednesday morning and found the baby apparently sleep ing quietly. Superior .Court Judge John J. Langenbach fix ed bail at $1000 apiece. (U.R) A new agreement in the graphic arts field between Columbia Univer sity and the Rochester Institute- of Technology is being nauea as a step forward within the printing industry for college graduates with a liberal arts background as well as technical competence. Beginning with the 1945-55 academic year, students from RIT's department of printing will be able to receive the Columbia degree of bachelor of fine arts after completion of additional requirements . in liberal arts courses. The arrengement will run for three' years. . Under the program, RIT stu dents will be allowed to trans fer credits in technical printing J courses towards the graphic arts requirements for the B.F.A. de gree. Straus of the Atomic Energy commission after a behind the scenes controversy over his ap pointment, it was reported' to day. Teeple, formerly was a secu rity officer of the wartime Man hattan district, which developed the atomic bombsi and later was a member of the staff of the House - Senate Atomic Energy committee in 1947 and 1948. He was a close adviser to Sen. Buorke B. Hickenlooper (R.-Ia.) in 1949 when the congressional committee investigated Kicken looper's charge of "incredible mismanagement" by the AEC's first chairman, David E. Lilien thai. Humphrey predicted last night that em ployment, income and trade in 1955 will go higher than in 1954 which he called "the best peace time year in history. In an election eve statement, Humphrey said "reports of im proving business and employ ment are multiplying." He cited previously published reports by the .Commerce and Labor De partment and the National Asso ciation of Purchasing Agents. Earlier, Democratic National Chairman Stephen A. Mitchell declared that "widespread unem ployment" in West Virginia is the fault of the Eisenhower ad ministration and not the state's two Democratic senators. Mitchell made public a tele gram be sent to Sen. Matthews M. Neely, a Democratic candi date for reelection, deploring what Mitchell called Republican attempts to blame Neely for un employment, in the state. . Mitchell quoted Labor Depart ment figures to show that unem ployment has increased in other states that have Republican senators.
