In 4 Mexican Farm Hands Die in Trailer Mishap Del Rio, Tex. (U.R) A huge tractor-trailer jammed with 85 Mexican migrant farm work ers hit a culvert and overturned yesterday, killing seven men and injuring more than 60 others. The dead and injured were mostly pinned under the wreck age of the huge trailer. At least eight of the injured were said to be in critical condition. The workers were being re turned to their homes in North ern Mexico. They had been picking cotton in the vicinity of Plainview, Tex. Inquisitive Man Answers Own Question Syracuse, N. Y. -ftJ.R) Rob ert Cushman, 25, learned some thing he hadn't known before when he met three boys carrying a cardboard box. "What's in the box?" Cush man asked. Herbert Brownell Jr., told a Republican rally Friday night that President Eisenhower cam paigned for the presidency on the platform of "Korea, Com munism and corruption and that all three problems have either been solved or are in the process of being solved. Brownell said Eisenhower needs a "friendly Congress" if he is to continue to fulfill his 1952 campaign promises. "The President and his staff painstakingly worked out a plan to end the Korean war," he said "If the President had accomp lished nothing else, he would heartily deserve the support of the American people. The attorney general said tfte administration s success in work ing out a West German rearma ment agreement and "getting Great Britain to give historic commitments of help" were "wonderful accomplishments for the peace of the world." "Germany is in better shape to meet the Communist threat of aggression than ever before in the postwar era," Brownell said. 'This is the first time in 20 years there have been no battlefronts in the entire world.' A three judge appeals court granted Powell liberty on oau nut nn hv a professional bonds man' Saturday after. Federal Judge F. Dickinson Letts sen tenced him to a year in jail for refusing to answer questions be fore a grand jury investigating him. Leaal Question Powell's attorney, Daniel B. Maher. said there is an import ant legal question involved be cause Powell "had a genuine fear of incrimination" when he refused to answer the grand hirv's Questions. Judge Letts, who heard the rase last Monday, found Powell "guilty of criminal contempt be- v.-mH reasonable doubt' in "willfullv. deliberately ana con tumaciously" refusing to give the jury information relating to the nationwide housing scandals. The anneals court reversed Letts' refusal to grant Powell liberty on bail. $55,000,000 in Civil Works Under Engineer Portland (U.R) Civil works construction and procurements items estimated to cost $55,000, 000 will be placed under con tract by the Army Corps of En gineers in Oregon, Washington and Alaska the remainder of the present fiscal year, it was an nounced Saturday. Col. L. H. Foote, North Paci fic division engineer, said con tracts would be awarded by var ious district offices at Portland, Seattle, Walla Walla and Anch orage. Twenty-eight major jobs which are expected to cost at least $100,000 are listed.
