Around Hollywood y AUNI MOSIY (laired Frees Cerreaaaiident Palm Springs OJ.B Tele vision is gruelling to many act tors but TV star Charles Farrell decided today it's a breeze compared to another job he holds. -Farrell, the only TV actor who is also a saloonkeeper, owns a swank private tennis , Aline Mosby tuvwr lionaires and movie stars, the Racquet Club, launched 20 years ago this Christmas in this cactus com munity. Looking over the club's his tory on its anniversary, the suave TV star reflected that co starring with Gale Storm in "My Little Margie" on radio and TV is "much easier" than catering to his celebrated guests. K f "At the club you have to greet people even if you don't feel like it," said Farrell as he relaxed in his tennis shorts by the pool. . . "A club must have a personal touch and members ex pect to see me here." , Even when he's working on the "Margie" show Farrell drives 100 miles from Hollywood to Palm Springs each week end and often during the week. The evolution of Charles Far rell and his club is an unusual success story. ' Farrell was a top matinee idol of the silents and early talkies. Even the club bar tender hasn't forgotten when Charlie wooed Janet Gaynor in "Seventh Heaven" (he serves a Seventh Heaven drink). In 19S4 Farrell and actor Ralph Bellamy (who later sold I out) built two tennis courts in Palm Springs, then whistle stop on the desert, for their own amusement. ' "We bought the land for $50 an acre," said Farrell. "Now It might be worth $40,000 an acre' Paul Lucas and Charlie Butter worth were among their pals who horned in on the courts. As more friends wanted to play, the Racquet Club ' expanded gradually to more courts, a pool, bar, dining room and rooms and cottages for 100 guests, i, Benny Show Jack Benny , immortalized the club 1 on his radio show; even Farrell's program featured the Racquet Club with another actor playing Charles iarreu. Children's Play Booked At Local Theater Thursday From the lips of the Irish bards have come stories of many of Ireland's great heroic and legendary figures. The lives of two of Ireland's great men and one of her legendary characters have been interwoven into a delightful and humorous story named "The Legend of Knockmany" and this is to be presented In Med ford as a children's play Thursday, November 3. The production is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Craterian theater under the sponsorship of Med ford branch, American Associa tion of University Women. As both Cuchullain and Finn Mc'Cool were giants, not in stature but in deeds of chivalry and heroism, it is easy to under stand why the vivid Irish imag ination has been able through the centuries to build the physi cal stature of these two men to match their personal glories. In the play Cuchullain has be come an aggressive giant. He wishes to become the ruling giant over all Ireland and can hardly wait to cross over into Ireland on the "pad road" which Finn Mc'Cool, a gentle and peaceful giant is finishing. Oonagh, Finn's wife who talks to the fairies, realizes the tre mendous danger that awaits Finn once the road is finished and does her best to keep him from finishing the task. How ever, Finn does complete the road and then realizes suddenly the terrible contest which. Cuch ullain is about to force upon him. Veteran Seaman Gives Lively Demonstration Detroit (U.R) Herbert Livs- ly,. a Great Lake seaman for more than half a century, is a lively old' salt. When well-wishers gathered aboard the steamer Columbia to help him celebrate his 72nd birthday, Lively gave them a demonstration of ladder climb ing and ship polishing. He is a second mate, on the vessel. Lively got his first job on a Great Lakes ship in 1002. - "I've been : on water ever since," he said. : i One-Armed Carpenter Never Hits Finger Davenport, Ida. In addition to the five live actors who comprise the cast, one additional and very Import ant member of the cast is a crea ture of wood and wires created especially for this production by the Lesselli Marionettes. Named Mr. Meebly, this little creature has "taken over the show from the members of the cast and is rapidly assuming all of the characteristics of a lepre chaun," according to reviews. What is a leprechaun? In Irish folk tales, a leprechaun is class ified as a "pygmy sprite" who is generally supposed to be In mis chief most of the time, but who will offer assistance to humans who are kind to him. Mr. Meebly is pale green, the color of the Irish woods from which he comes. His voice and manipulation have been assigned to Walter Murphy who also plays the role of the cousin; Tickets are available from AAUW members and will also be on sale at the city schools for two days prior to the play.
