Wilson the foundations Deal-Democratic presidential campaign which dra matized the economic woes of the United States in terms of Jobless men and women. Unemployment never . again became an issue enabling the ousted Republicans to beat their way back to power. Mr. Roose velt, however, never was able to correct the condition which so notably assisted him to the White House. 'There still were 5,560, 000 persons unemployed in 1941, the first year of Mr. Roosevelt's third term. They represented nearly 10 per cent of the avail able labor force, which is con siderable unemployment. - Even the booming production of goods to support the British and Rus sians against Germany and Italy had been .'unable , to provide enough work , in : the United States. 1 . -. Disappears With War Then the war hit home and un employment began to disappear. President Eisenhower and Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell now are pounding away as this cam paign ends at the idea that pres ent unemployment is not ex cessive,, although deplorable, in consideration of : the circum stances of recent peace and a change-over from a war econ omy. They argue that full en ployment at the cost of war is not worth the cost or the cost of inflation, of. currency. . That probably sounds like so many big words, to an unem ployed man or woman, especially one with a family to feed. Best news for the jobless is that un employment is being reduced. Mr. Elsenhower and Mitchell an nounced that this week. CIO Challenges Figures The CIO instantly challenged the figures offered as mere guesses. But on the basis of the record, if the President's figures are anywhere near correct, the unemployment situation today is a great deal better than in any but a couple of recent peace-time years before Mr. Eisenhower took office. For 10 peace-time years, 1937- 41 and 1046-50, both inclusive, the average number of unem ployed was approximately 4, 700,000. Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell said Tuesday that unemployment had fallen on the last check, as of early this muiith, by 358,000 and amounted to ap proximately 2,700,000 now. That is well under the average. It is' about 4.1 per cent of the labor force. . Miss Winters is under appoint ment of the Foreign Missions de partment of the Assemblies of field, Mo. Prior to going to Africa, Miss . Winters was in Wendell, Ida. She attended Glad Tidings Bible in stitute, Santa Cruz, Calif., and the Bible Institute, Los Angeles The service tonight is the first of four to be held at the church , this week end. Services will be held Friday and. Saturday at. 7:45 p. m. The convention will close at a missionary rally Sun. day at 3 p. m. with all the As semblies of God churches in southern Oregon participating. ' The Rev. F. Wtldon Colbaugh, pastor, stated that the public is invited to attend all of the serv ices and to see the films and' curios from the foreign fields which will be on display.
