Is That So? ' Did you know that . . . , ' All twining vines twist from left to right north of the equa tor; south, they all climb from right to left. "Seeing red" meant to be angry as a bull who has been maddened by the waving of a red cloth before his eyes. Curiously enough, the bull, like all other mammals below the primates, it color-blind. He is angered by Ihe waving of the cloth rather than its color, . The Mimosa plant, a native to Brazil, is so sensitive that when one of its leaves is touched, all the leaves on that stem will fold up and the stem itself will droop to the ground. Walking through a bed of Mimosa is a startling experience., One's footsteps ap pear like a patch of desolation every plant that has been touch ed has closed it leaves and its branches have drooped to the ground, giving the appearance of being withered and dead. With the rising sun, however, the stem straightens up, the leaves unfold, and the plant goes about its bus iness of making a living. Bright, clear skies, with a touch of clouds, were predicted for today. The weatherman said the at mospheric inversion layer that had clamped the lid on smog for nearly three weeks had lifted and fresh winds should ''remove the pollution we can't teem to remove ourselves." - Some sections in the Los Ange les basin area experienced only light smog in the past few days, but the weatherman said this was the first "real relief" for the entire area. Warned Against Letdown Gov. Goodwin J. Knight said the present respite from the smog siege should not be tne cause for complacency" and re newed his request that the oil in dustry shut down its refineries here for a "test period" to deter mine the "extent of the indus try's responsibility in -this very serious problem." . However, Knight admitted he had no legal authority to force the closing of the refineries, Tne industry flatly refused his pro posal earlier. Meanwhile, two University of California scientists in Berkeley, Calif., who conducted a study of smog over Oakland and other East Bay communities, report the polluted air contained an acidic substance. Acid in Oakland Air -The substance appeared to be a derivative compound of formic acid or acetic acid, they said, found in the exhaust of automo bile motors, in smoke from in cinerators, gas fires and wood fires. ' - ' The scientists, Doctors Ber nard D. Tebbens and Jack D. Torrey of the School of Public Health at the university, dis closed their findings in the tech nical journal Science. They described formic acid as the irritating material secreted by stinging ants. Acetic acid Is the acid in vinegar. Also in the car. but uninjured was Delores Ingram, 16, of Eu gene. Police said the accident hap pened in a heavy fog. Nixon in a press conference here yesterday, also charged that some campaigning Democrats are trying to "ride on President Eisenhower's coattails.' The .vice-president said that the 1952 Democratic presidential candidate "has not changed since he testified for Alger Hiss." Said Advocating Return "Stevenson, by falling to re tract his attack on the security risk program," Nixon said, "is advocating a return to those pol icies of Truman. "Stevenson's blindness on the security risk program gives the voters a powerful argument to reject his proposal to return to a Democratic Congress." -' When asked who specifically was trying to ride the president's coattails, Nixon replied a Demo cratic Senator from Montana (who he did not name) is cam paigning with an authographed photograph of the President arid himself, although he has voted against the administration pro grams 75 per cent of the time. Sen. James E.' Murray, Demo crat of Butte, Mont., is the only senator campaigning for reelec tion in Montana. His criticism of Stevenson was in answer to Stevenson's state ment Saturday that the Republi can high command has turned the campaign into an "ugly slug fest" under the "boisterous" leadership of Nixon. The vice-president flew .here from Salt Lake City, Utah, where earlier yesterday he de scribed the new Western Euro pean Defense Union agreement as the "most effective blow that has been struck for freedom since World War II." Guy Madison To Wed Television Actress Hollywood (U.R) Actor Guy Madison will divorce actress Gail RusssU in Juarez, Mex., to morrow and "minutes later" will marry television acress Sheilah Connolly, according to his press representative. Madison was granted an inter loctutory decree from Mlsi Rus sell here Oct. 6 following a sepa ration of nearly two years. Last week Miss Russell signed a wniver to allow Madison to seek an Immediate divorce in Mexico. Miss Connolly, 24, whom Mad ison met last April, was a New Ycrk model before turning to acting. It will be Madison s second marriage. Miss Connolly di vorced film producer Harry Dnnziger in 1952. . Nationalist Soldiers Raid China Mainland Taipen, Formosa, (U.R) Chi nese newsmen returning from Tachen Island said today 'Na tionalist Chinese soldiers raided the China mainland last Friday and killed or wounded 10 Reds. Radio Pelping early had re ported the raid in a version which said the, landing was made on the Cheklang coast under a 200 -round Nationalist Naval bombardment. Pelping said only 15 National ist Chinese took part in the raid. Nationalist newsmen said the raiders landed at 3:30 a.m. and withdrew at 7:20 a.m. They re ported the raiders killed 20 Chi nese Communist soldiers and wounded another 80.
