Cox, CAT president, said the accidental flashing of a warning light blinded pilot Harry Kaffenberger, of New Weston, O., and the plane plum eted Into the sea with the loss of six of the seven persons aboard. Cox returned here after com pleting an on-the-spot investiga tion. He said Kaffenberger, the lone survivor,, told him what happened. "The pilot had Just finished his last run over the dropping area and was at low altitude when a warning light was acci dentally turned on by the dis patcher in the rear of the plane, momentarily blinding the pilot," Cox said. , "Before the pilot could recover his vision the plane hit the sea." The twln-cnglned plane was on charter to Sea Supply, an Ameri can company under contract to the Thailand Police Department. Welcomes Red Opposition Nixon, meanwhile, declared in Montana that the .Communist Party has called for the defeat of all GOP candidates in next month's election. He said he had learned that the Reds had de cided to "fight out the issues within the Democratic ; party." "We welcome the opposition of the Communist Party In this campaign," the vice - president said. "The greatest issue of the 1954 campaign is an awareness in and an understanding of Com munism in the United States." The latest attack on Harriman F' Sack To Appeal Death Sentence rr: Portland U.R) Convicted murderer George F. Sack grasped a new lease on life Saturday following notice by his attorney that the Circuit Court conviction would be appealed to the State Supreme Court. Attorney John ; P. ; Harmon filed notice of - appeal " Friday and was given 10 days in which to file-a bill of exceptions list, ing the basis for. the appeal. Hannon said he would move, for an extension of time.- Sack was convicted of the as phyxiation murder of his, third vfite, Goldie Goodrich Sack, a former Montana school teacher. Her body was found last Febru ary in a clump of bushes in east Portland. A circuit court jury convicted Sack of murdering her by plac ing her unconscious body in the trunk of his car. He was sent enced to die In the state's lethal gas chamber "but the latest move by his attorney blocked execu tion of the death sentence. 1 was launched by retiring New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, He accused Harriman and his associates of making "millions" in a mining deal in which "de liberately misinformed Inves tors" lost $9,000,000. Harriman Charges "Smear" Harriman immediately called the charge "distortion and smear" and said ne would "con tinue to discuss the issues." Dewey said another "chapter" in the life of Harriman would be revealed tonight in a speech by Sen. Irving M. Ives, Harrl man'a Republican foe. - At Albuquerque, N.M., Demo cratic Senate Leader Lyndon B. Johnson said he and House Dem ocratic Leader Sam Rayburn have already worked out a ten tative legislative program if the Democrats win control of 'the new Congress. He said the program, complete to naming of Democratic com mittee chairman, would "pledge complete cooperating with Pres ident Eisenhower in a single- purpose foreign policy; an ade quate defense program .'. . and a - thorough: ventilatipn of the 'NIxon-Dlxoh-Yates deal . . ." (See Story on Page 1) Headon Crash Takes Lives of Three People Ontario, Ore. U.R Three young people were killed about five miles east of here in Idaho in a two-car collision early Sat urday," the Payette county sher iffs office reported. ' , 'The-victims were identified as Roger A. Erwln, 22, Emmett, Ida.; Theron Secoy, 19, Ontario, and Jo Ann Hale,- 17,. Payette. . " The sheriff's office said the cars collided head-on just south of tne Payette city limits. The girl was a passenger in' the car driven by Secoy. Erwln "was alone, the sheriff 'a office said. Youngster Killed In Fall From Cor Coos Bay (U.R) Three-year- old Michael Lee iStolz of Wolf Creek was killed at 0:19 a. m. Saturday when he fell from ; moving automobile. i The youngster's father told police he and his son were driv ing along the Beach Loop road hear Bandon when he noticed the boy had opened the car door. Fearing a sudden stop would jar the boy out of the car, the father, Robert H. Stolz, said he applied the brakes gradually. But the boy already had fallen from the car, and apparently was killed Instantly. The Stolz family was visiting in Bandon. Two Women Saved From Possible Drowning . . Albany, Ore. (U.R), Two women were saved from possi ble drowning Friday when the automobile in which they were riding plunged into a Pacific Power & Light Company canal two miles south of Albany. Mrs. Helen R. Pool and her daughter, Mrs. Patricia Montank, both of Shedd, were rescued by residents of the area who used a ladder to form a bridge from the shore to the submerged car. The two women managed to climb out of the car unassisted. State police said the car was carried downstream about 100 feet before it came to rest on the canal bottom. Colleges Refuse To Allow Debate on Red Entry in UN Lincoln, Neb. (U.R) College officials lined up Saturday on both the affirmative and nega tive sides in a debate whether it is all right for students to debate recognitiori of Commu nist China. Refusal of four Nebraska State teachers colleges to allow debate on the recognition question Fri day touched off a lively discus sion among educators. Raps Cordon Record ' However, Neuberger and Hitchcock disagreed on the vot ing record of Sen. Guy Cordon, who opposes Neuberger in the Nov. 2 election. , Neuberger said Cordon voted against the Hill amendment to reserve offshore oil revenues for the schools, despite endorsement by every major education group in the country, including the OEA. Hitchcock contended "a man is sent to the' Legislature to vote his own conscience." While Neuberger and Hitch cock were airing their views before the teachers group, Sen. Cordon was calling for an end to "useless campaign bickering" at a Republican candidates meeting night in Portland s St. Johns district. "False Charges" ; 5 Cordon said "false statements, false charges against me, wild impossible promises are a din in our ears.," . He likened the congressional faces to a football game "where we have just finished the first half and you have a winning team now in Congress. General Hewett Heads Anti-Aircraft Defense : San Francisco -r- (U.R) Sixth Army headquarters has an nounced that Maj. Gen. Hobart Hewett, one of the nation's lead ing anti-aircraft defense experts, hai assumed command of all Nike guided missile and otter ack-ack defenses in the seven western states. . : Gen. Hewett succeeds Maj. Gen. Francis M. Day as com mander of the western army anti-aircraft commission, with headquarters at Fort Baker, Murln County. The anti-aircraft command is under over-all operational con trol of Maj. Gen. Walter E. Todd, hetd. of4the. Western Air De fense Force, and is part of the newly formed Continental Air Defense Command, a joint Army-Navy-Air Force team. Ike Predicts World Peace To Be Permanent Washington (U.R) President Eisenhower Friday told a na tional committee for a stronger United Nations he believes the world will come very close to permanent peace during our time. : Meeting with 55 members of the U. S. Committee for the Uni ted Nations, Mr. Eisenhower said the members have con tributed toward peace in their efforts on behalf of the United Nations. The meeting was held in, the White House Cabinet Room.
