Historical Society Forced To Decline Britt Home Bequest The board of directors of the Southern Oregon Historical So ciety, Inc., voted Friday nifcht to inform Herman L. Lind, execu tor, and Frank J. Van Dyke, at torney, for the Amalia Britt es tate that the society will be un able to maintain the Britt resi dence in Jacksonville as a mu seum. The action followed sever al days of inspection of the prem ises and consideration and study of th will of the late Miss Britt. The residence and photo graphic studio were bequeathed to the society, together with a trurt fund of $25,000, the income from the latter to be used to help defray the cost of maintain ing the. place as a museum and historical monument in honor of the memory of Miss Britt's fa ther, Peter Britt, pioneer south ern Oregon photographer. Board Explains Dtcision I In a letter drafted by the board, the members told the ex ecutor that the Historical society, Police Officers Give Safely Talks In City's Schools Members of Medford's city po nce department made talks to four grade schools on safety last week, according to Chief Charles Champlin, General topics stressed were police friendship, associating with strangers, bicycle safety and pedestrian rules. Police warned against accept ing rides, candy or money from strangers. Reasons, were outlined for bi cycle safety, which included pre venting Injuries, and death as well as to prepare for future driving. Cyclists were asked to keep their, bicycles in' good shape and to "ride by the rules," including such precautions as to keeping to the right and riding in a straight line in single file. Pedestrians Safely Pedestrians were warned to walk facing the oncoming traf- llc where no sidewalks exists, always to use crosswalks and to keep from playing in the streets. Two teams of officers deliver ed the talks to individual class rooms. Sgt. Rollle-Pcan and Of ficer Berle Stephens spoke to classes at the Roosevelt and Washington schools, and Offic ers Raymond Seely and ! Harold Sllger appeared at the Jackson and Lincoln schools. ' School safety is part of the overall police safety nrninm being carried out by the depart ment, v.nampnn added. being a non-profit organization, has no funds to devote to the Britt project, and that the in come from the trust fund would be far short of the estimated $5,000 to. $8,500 required an nually to maintain a staff of at tendants, make repairs, pay for utilities, insurance and other necessities. The directors said they had considered making a nominal ad mission charge, but reached the conclusion that even this addi tional revenue could not be counted on to cover the outgo. It was furthed pointed out by the directors that the Britt resi dence is very old, that the in terior arrangement is such that visitors could be accommodated in the upstairs studio portion only in small groups 'and that there maytbe some question asj to wnetner tne fire and building codes would permit its use for public purposes. , Alternative Suggested As an alternative, the direc tors suggested to the executor that the studio equipment and such icms in the dwelling quar ters as might have public inter est be placed in the Jacksonville Museum, which the society ad ministers under the county court. There the display could be given suitable space and designated as the Peter Britt Memorial Exhibit and could be viewed convenient ly by the thousands who visit the Jacksonville Museum each year. Under the terms of the will, it the Historical society is unable to maintain the Britt place as a mu seum the executor has the au thority to place the studio equip ment and such of the home fur nishings as he may elect in a museum. The directors stated their belief that the Jacksonville Museum would be the logical place for the collection as most of the items, especially the pic tures of early day residents, have Interest only for people in this area. . If the directors' suggestion is carried out, the $25,000 trust would revert to a fund which the will sets up to provide scholar ships for graduates of Jackson ville High school.
