But what can a mother do when her son falls in love with the wrong kind? This woman writes: (Q) "My sen. who Is 20 years old, has fallen in love with worthless girl. She could ; easily talk him out of any resolu- ; McCormick Mansion Relic oi By-Gone Era Orieaso U.PJ The ornate mansion built by Cyrus McCor mick, inventor of the reaper, is now a sad relic of a long-dead era. Its 45 rooms are littered with trash, the windows are broken and the carved wood work hares loosely from walls. Tramps and other habitues of the nearbv Clark Street "skid row" sleep on the floors where Chicago's high society once danced in gala soirees. The front door hancs open, giving the derelicts easy entry. Every win dow in the building is broken. McCormick spent several mil lion dollars to build the home and furnish it between 1874 and 1879. It is located at 675 Rush stret, once a "silk stocking" dis trict that is now a street of night clubs. After McCormick's death, his widow, the former Netty Fowler of Clayton, N. Y, continued to live there as one of the town's leading socialites and philan thropists. Now the rooms are littered with tin cans, milk cartons and whisky bottles. Two years ago, a development company planned to build a 12 story apartment building on the site at a cost of $2,000,000, of fering 120 suites of three, four and five rooms. A receiver was named for the company, however, and the plans were tied up in court ac tion. These planes are operated by 12 U.S. and foreign airlines now flying between the North Amer ican continent and Europe. Planes, official organ of Air craft Industries Association, said they are a part of the total world airline of some 4,000 transports, four-fifths of them produced by the aircraft plants of the United States. These figures were revealed in a summary of civil aviation activity in 1952, prepared by Dr. Edward Warner, president of the council of the International Civil Aviation Organization. The survey indicates that trans-Atlantic fares have re mained almost constant during the past seven years, while the best scheduled airline time be tween New York and London has been reduced by five hours and 50 minutes. Best scheduled time in 1952 was 11 hours and 45 minutes; in 1946, it was 17 hours and 35 minutes. Standard first-class one-way passenger fares at the peak traf fic season increased only $2 dur ing the period despite a 36 increase in the U.S. cost-of-living index, Dr. Warner reported.
